12,13-diHOME as a new therapeutic target for metabolic diseases

Ana Paula Azevedo Macedo et al.

Summary: Lipokines are bioactive compounds derived from adipose tissue depots and play a role in controlling molecular signaling pathways. One specific oxylipin, called 12,13-dihydroxy-9Z-octadecenoic acid (12,13-diHOME), has shown potential in improving metabolic health through its action on brown adipose tissue (BAT). Studies have found that stimuli like physical exercise and exposure to cold can increase circulating levels of 12,13-diHOME, leading to enhanced fatty acid absorption by BAT and stimulation of the browning process in white adipose tissue (WAT). Strategies aimed at increasing 12,13-diHOME levels may hold promise for preventing and treating obesity and metabolic diseases.

Summary: BAT transplantation appears to reduce weight gain and white adipocyte size. It seems to promote the regeneration of healthy adipose tissue by activating endogenous BAT. Further studies are needed to evaluate the outcomes and procedures for potential clinical application.

Brown and beige adipose tissue: a novel therapeutic strategy for obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus

Long Cheng et al.

Summary: There are two major types of adipose tissue in mammals, white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT), with different functions. White adipocytes can transdifferentiate into beige adipocytes, which play a significant role in the treatment of obesity and diabetes. Activation of BAT and induction of browning of WAT may provide a new strategy for improving glycolipid metabolism and insulin resistance in obese and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.

Beige Adipose Tissue Identification and Marker Specificity-Overview

Anna-Claire Pilkington et al.

Summary: Adipose tissue is classified based on its characteristics, but differentiating beige adipose tissue (BeAT) remains a challenge. Recent research focuses on identifying different types of adipose tissue through transcript markers to advance understanding of their biology. The development of concrete strategies to distinguish types of adipose tissue may be crucial for improving metabolic health and preventing excessive weight gain.

The Role of AMPK Signaling in Brown Adipose Tissue Activation

Jamie I. van der Vaart et al.

Summary: Obesity is on the rise and research is focusing on new ways to combat it, with a particular interest in targeting brown adipose tissue (BAT) and AMPK to increase energy expenditure and regulate energy balance. AMPK can be activated by various kinases, hormones, and metabolic stresses to activate BAT, but further research is needed before using it as a target for anti-obesity treatment.
