Boosting CO2 hydrogenation performance for light olefin synthesis over GaZrOx combined with SAPO-34

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: A highly active and selective bifunctional catalyst, GaZrOx/SAPO-34, was developed for CO2 hydrogenation into C-2(-)-C-4(-). The catalyst exhibited high selectivity and olefin yield, outperforming previous reports. The activity and selectivity of the catalyst were found to be influenced by Ga:Zr atomic ratio, surface oxygen vacancy content, and H-2 dissociation ability.

Spatiotemporal Coke Coupling Enhances para-Xylene Selectivity in Highly Stable MCM-22 Catalysts

Deependra Parmar et al.

Summary: This study identifies a zeolite catalyst that can optimize both p-xylene selectivity and feed utilization in toluene alkylation with methanol reaction. The zeolite MCM-22 (MWW) demonstrates exceptional catalyst lifetime under high operating pressure, conversion, and selectivity. The research uncovers the catalytic behavior of different active sites in distinct topological features of MCM-22, revealing the contributions of sinusoidal channels and supercages to high p-xylene yield and catalyst stability. The findings propose a spatiotemporal coke coupling phenomenon to explain the multistage p-xylene selectivity profile and highlight the importance of coke nature in catalyst performance.

Stable and reusable hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite with superior performance for olefin oligomerization when partially coked

Hend Omar Mohamed et al.

Summary: The nature and location of coke in zeolite catalysis have an interdependence with its true character in the mechanisms of ethylene oligomerization. Coke can improve the selectivity and yield of higher olefins and jet-fuel aliphatics, and this effect is better exploited in polymeric templated (hierarchical) ZSM-5 zeolite, which also exhibits good stability.

Real-time regeneration of a working zeolite monitored via operando X-ray diffraction and crystallographic imaging: how coke flees the MFI framework

Georgios N. Kalantzopoulos et al.

Summary: This study monitors the regeneration process of H-ZSM-5 using PXRD and MS, providing details on the mode of coke removal and sub-unit cell changes of the zeolite structure. The results reveal that coke removal is a complex process involving thermal decomposition and oxidation. Additionally, the study explains why the difference in length between the a-vector and b-vector of the MFI unit cell is a robust descriptor for bulky coke.

Tuning direct CO hydrogenation reaction over Fe-Mn bimetallic catalysts toward light olefins: Effects of Mn promotion

Zixu Yang et al.

Summary: Highly dispersed FeMn bimetallic nanoparticles prepared by a low-temperature co-precipitation method were used for direct CO hydrogenation to produce light olefins. The strong interaction between Fe and Mn stabilized the Fe1-xMnxO phase during activation, while Mn decreased the surface energy of nanocrystals and reduced agglomeration, resulting in smaller particle sizes of Mn-promoted catalysts.

Jose Valecillos et al.

Summary: The dynamics of retained and deactivating species in a SAPO-18 catalyst during the methanol-to-olefins reaction were studied using a combination of ex-situ and in-situ techniques. Co-feeding water was found to decrease the formation and degradation rates of retained species while extending the catalyst's lifetime by reducing deactivation.

Olefin oligomerization by main group Ga3+ and Zn2+ single site catalysts on SiO2

Nicole J. LiBretto et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that silica-supported, single-site catalysts containing immobilized main group Zn2+ and Ga3+ ion sites can catalyze the oligomerization of ethylene and propylene to produce linear olefins, with rates similar to Ni2+ and higher molecular weight olefins for Ga3+. The oligomerization was suggested to occur via metal hydride and metal alkyl intermediates formed during olefin insertion and beta-hydride elimination elementary steps, with initiation proposed to occur through heterolytic C-H dissociation of ethylene at around 250 degrees C. This study illuminates new chemistry for main group metal catalysts with potential for developing new oligomerization processes.

Ethylene oligomerization on nickel catalysts on a solid acid support: From New mechanistic insights to tunable bifunctionality

Elsa Koninckx et al.

Summary: This study provides a complete and detailed mechanism of heterogeneous Ni-catalyzed oligomerization on solid acids for efficient production of desired products. By combining experimental, computational, and modeling studies, the bifunctional effects of nickel and acid sites on ethylene oligomerization are elucidated, highlighting the potential for optimal catalyst design. The selective oligomerization of ethylene to light, linear alkenes via the Cossee-Arlman mechanism by Ni2+ and further catalysis by Bronsted H+ sites are systematically discussed, emphasizing the importance of reaction conditions and catalyst properties.

Coke deactivation and regeneration of HZSM-5 zeolite catalysts in the oligomerization of 1-butene

Marta Diaz et al.

Summary: The deactivation of HZSM-5 catalysts in 1-butene oligomerization is mainly caused by the confinement of oligomers (soft coke) in the catalyst matrix. Soft coke is removed at 400 degrees C by TPS-N-2, while hard coke is removed by combustion. Two types of hard coke are distinguished, with the fraction located in zeolite micropores being more refractory to combustion.

Study of catalyst deactivation during 1,3-butanediol dehydration to produce butadiene

Andrea C. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study investigated catalyst deactivation and mechanism of coke formation during gas phase dehydration of 1,3-butanediol on various solid acids. Different nature of cokes formed on different catalysts were characterized, with higher molecular weight carbonaceous products observed on HZSM5 and TPA/SiO2 compared to Al2O3 and SiO2/Al2O3. Insoluble coke was only detected on TPA/SiO2, attributed to the strength of its Bronsted acid sites. Additionally, GCMS chromatograms of total soluble coke revealed the presence of aromatic and polyaromatic species, particularly well differentiated on HZSM5.
