Semiconducting Polymers for Oxygen Evolution Reaction under Light Illumination

Yuanxing Fang et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the photocatalytic technologies and materials of polymeric photocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Two practical systems, namely particle suspension and film-based photoelectrochemical systems, are discussed. The concept is reviewed in terms of thermodynamics and kinetics, and the key characteristics of polymeric photocatalysts, such as light absorption, charge separation and transfer, and surface oxidation reactions, are examined. Satisfactory OER performance by polymeric photocatalysts could lead to cost-effective, sustainable, and renewable water splitting and other advanced applications using solar energy.

Significantly enhanced charge transfer efficiency and surface reaction on NiP2/g-C3N4 heterojunction for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Xiaoqing Yan et al.

Summary: A novel NiP2/g-C3N4 heterojunction was designed and constructed using a homogeneous precipitation method assisted by thermal phosphorization reaction. The optimized sample exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for H-2 evolution under visible-light irradiation, which was 112 times higher than that of the pristine g-C3N4 sample. Experimental characterizations and DFT calculations revealed that the NiP2 nanoparticles formed a built-in electric field at the interface, facilitating the transfer of photoexcited electrons and inhibiting the recombination of electron-hole pairs. Additionally, the energy barrier of hydrogen evolution reaction was significantly reduced in the NiP2/g-C3N4 heterojunction. This work demonstrates a method that combines experimental and theoretical tools to investigate the mechanism of the photocatalytic process.

Constructing a coplanar heterojunction through enhanced π-π conjugation in g-C3N4 for efficient solar-driven water splitting

Zihao Chen et al.

Summary: This study achieves efficient photogenerated carrier separation by adjusting the electronic structure of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalyst through pi-pi conjugation. A coplanar heterojunction is created by doping crystalline g-C3N4 with a conjugated double bond ring molecule, resulting in the retention of the g-C3N4 network structure and enhanced separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. The new g-C3N4 photocatalyst demonstrates high hydrogen production efficiency under visible light irradiation.

Direct observation of dynamic interfacial bonding and charge transfer in metal-free photocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution

Linwen Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple method of incorporating covalent triazine frameworks with ultrathin black phosphorus nanosheets resulted in one of the highest hydrogen evolution activities among metal-free photocatalysts. The interfacial P-C bonding between BP and CTFs was found to be crucial for promoting photocatalytic activity and stability, with enhanced electron transfer from CTF to BP surfaces under light irradiation. Additionally, the electron enrichments on BP effectively restrained surface oxidation, leading to improved photocatalytic stability of BP/CTF. This work not only provided an effective way to fabricate highly efficient metal-free photocatalysts, but also offered unique insights into the fundamentals of photocatalytic reactions.
