Activity restriction and preterm birth prevention

Emily E. Nuss et al.

Summary: Evidence from both retrospective and prospective studies has shown that activity restriction does not significantly prolong pregnancy and may not improve obstetrical and perinatal outcomes. On the contrary, physical activity during pregnancy has been associated with positive outcomes such as higher incidence of vaginal delivery and lower incidence of gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders without increasing the risk of adverse neonatal outcomes. The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine has recently updated its recommendation to suggest that activity restriction should not be routinely prescribed as a treatment to prevent preterm birth.

Validation of Two Activity Monitors in Slow and Fast Walking Hospitalized Patients

Britt Staevnsbo Pedersen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the validity and reliability of the ActivPAL3(TM) and the SENS motion(R) activity monitors in measuring steps, walking, and sedentary behavior in hospitalized patients. The study found that both monitors had good agreement with direct observation for standing, steps, and lying, but the agreement for walking was moderate for ActivPAL3(TM) and high for SENS motion(R). The relative reliability was moderate for sedentary behavior for both monitors.

Effects on the maternal-fetal health outcomes of various physical activity types in healthy pregnant women. A systematic review and meta-analysis

Javier Ramon Diaz-Burrueco et al.

Summary: The study found that physical activity during pregnancy can reduce the risk of gestational weight gain, gestational diabetes, and hypertensive disorders. Supervised exercise and static cycling showed protective effects on controlling weight gain. The results suggest the need for establishing a core outcome set.
