Treatment of Hospital wastewater with submerged aerobic fixed film reactor coupled with tube-settler

Nadeem A. Khan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the series-connected SAFF reactor and tubesettler have high removal efficiency for hospital wastewater treatment, although nitrate concentration may increase. SAFF and tubesettler each have advantages in removing COD, BOD5, and phosphate, but may fall short in nitrate removal. Nitrification reactions indicate good aeration in the system, but an anaerobic unit is still needed for complete denitrification.

Research on removal of fluoroquinolones in rural domestic wastewater by vertical flow constructed wetlands under different hydraulic loads

Wenjing Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that using ceramsite and soil as media in VFCWs can effectively remove fluoroquinolones and conventional pollutants in rural domestic wastewater. Under low hydraulic load, VFCW-D filled with 45 cm soil layer and 15 cm ceramsite layer had the highest removal efficiency. However, under high hydraulic load, the removal efficiency of conventional pollutants significantly declined due to the clogging of soil pores by organic matter accumulation. Nevertheless, VFCW-A filled with 60 cm ceramsite layer showed good ability to remove both conventional pollutants and fluoroquinolones under high hydraulic load.

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes from wastewater treated in constructed wetlands

Junwen Ma et al.

Summary: With the advancement of technology, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have become significant pollutants in the environment. Constructed wetlands (CWs) have shown to be effective in removing antibiotics and ARGs from wastewater, with vertical-flow subsurface CWs showing the highest removal efficiency for antibiotics and CWs with plants and substrate materials demonstrating high efficiency in removing antibiotics as well as ARGs.

Application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for pharmaceuticals and personal care productions removal in constructed wetlands with different substrate

Bo Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of substrates on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonization and the impacts of AMF inoculation on the removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Results showed that using adsorptive substrates in constructed wetlands can enhance AMF colonization. AMF can influence the uptake and translocation of PPCPs in plant tissues.

Behaviour of 27 selected emerging contaminants in vertical flow constructed wetlands as post-treatment for municipal wastewater

Silvia Venditti et al.

Summary: The study investigated the efficiency of different substrates in removing emerging contaminants from wastewater using Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands (VFCWs). The laboratory investigation showed that VFCWs could provide excellent effluent quality, with overall removal efficiencies exceeding 90% in most cases. Substrate type played a role in the removal of compounds with medium elimination. Under real conditions, VFCWs with 15% activated biochar mixed with sand were effective in removing 18 emerging contaminants and meeting national discharge standards for 4 selected compounds.

A review on constructed wetlands-based removal of pharmaceutical contaminants derived from non-point source pollution

Yuvaraj Ravikumar et al.

Summary: Non-Point Source (NPS) pollution is a critical global problem, leading to excessive supply of organic and inorganic pollutants and changing water quality. Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been gaining attention for their potential in mitigating pharmaceutical contaminants (PCs) in soil and water reservoirs. This paper summarizes the sources, occurrence, fate, and ecotoxicological effects of PCs derived from NPS pollution, discusses the significance of plants and other factors in CWs for efficient removal of PCs, and emphasizes the need for future research to improve the application of CWs.

Assessment of the contribution of various constructed wetland components for the removal of pharmaceutically active compounds

Manthiram Karthik Ravichandran et al.

Summary: Constructed wetland (CW) is an effective method for attenuating pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) from wastewater. The degradation of PhACs in CW is influenced by redox conditions and different components of the system. Plants and substrate materials play important roles in the removal of organics, nutrients, and PhACs from wastewater in CW.

Yu-Xiao Cheng et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that modified tidal flow constructed wetlands are effective in removing organic pollutants, especially pharmaceutical and personal care products, with significant removal rates. Mass balance analysis of 24 PPCPs revealed that microbial degradation dominates their removal, with enhanced removal efficiency through changes in dominant microorganisms.

New insights on the combined removal of antibiotics and ARGs in urban wastewater through the use of two configurations of vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands

Cristina Avila et al.

Summary: The study investigated the removal of 49 antibiotics and 11 selected antibiotic resistance genes in two vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands. It was found that the partially saturated unit (SVF) showed more significant removal of certain antibiotics compared to the unsaturated unit (UVF). All selected antibiotic resistance genes were detected in influent wastewater and in the biofilm of both wetlands, with varying removal rates.

Hydrological and palynological evidence of wetland evolution on the Sanjiang Plain (NE China) in response to the Holocene East Asia summer monsoon

Zhenqing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that the wetland evolution in the Sanjiang Plain has been significantly influenced by the East Asian summer monsoon circulation. A transition from a shallow-water lake to a wetland occurred around 4.5 ka BP, coinciding with a decline in the strength of the monsoon. The wetland development over the past 4.5 ka BP has been closely linked to variations in the East Asian summer monsoon.
