Fine-tuned crystallinity of polymerized non-fullerene acceptor via molecular engineering towards efficient all-polymer solar cell

Yuxiang Li et al.

Summary: By optimizing the central core and pi-spacer of polymerized non-fullerene acceptors, the solid-state crystallinity can be regulated to improve the performance of all-polymer solar cells, especially the short-circuit current density and open circuit voltage. Chlorinated PY-2T2Cl can form an ideal blend morphology when paired with polymer donor, leading to a higher power conversion efficiency in the resulting solar cells.

Mechanism study on organic ternary photovoltaics with 18.3% certified efficiency: from molecule to device

Yaokai Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the working mechanism of ternary blend organic photovoltaics based on non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). Molecular dynamics simulations and morphology characterization reveal that the addition of larger band gap and highly miscible NFAs improves composition-dependent band gap and charge recombination, leading to enhanced power conversion efficiency.

Effect of Additives and Annealing on the Performance of Nonfullerene-Based Binary and Ternary Organic Photovoltaics

Enas Moustafa et al.

Summary: This study investigates the morphological control of binary and ternary blends in organic photovoltaics through the addition of 1-chloronaphthalene and thermal annealing treatments. The results show that the performance of binary and ternary OPVs is affected differently by these treatments. The highest efficiencies are achieved in both binary and ternary OPVs due to the dual effect of 2% CN solvent additive and TA treatments.

Improved Blend Film Morphology and Free Carrier Generation Provide a High-Performance Ternary Polymer Solar Cell

Bing-Huang Jiang et al.

Summary: Non-fullerene organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have achieved high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). By optimizing the blend morphology of a two-donor (PM6, TPD-3F)/one-acceptor (Y6) ternary blend, improved OPV performance was achieved. Good miscibility between PM6 and TPD-3F, combined with device optimization using 1-chloronaphthalene as an additive, resulted in efficient exciton dissociation and carrier transport for higher PCE.

Organic Photovoltaics: Understanding the Preaggregation of Polymer Donors in Solution and Its Morphological Impact

Tonghui Wang et al.

Summary: This study uses thermodynamic analysis, molecular dynamics simulations, and density functional theory calculations to establish the χ value as a useful figure of merit for evaluating the extent of polymer aggregation in solution, and explores how intermolecular interactions between polymers and solvents contribute to the variations in χ values. By examining four representative polymer donors in solution, the research provides a detailed description of the relationships among intermolecular interactions, polymer solution aggregation, and morphological features of the active layers with χ as a robust bridge.

A universal Urbach rule for disordered organic semiconductors

Christina Kaiser et al.

Summary: The absorption onset sharpness in crystalline semiconductors is characterized by temperature-dependent Urbach energies, quantifying both static and dynamic disorder. The applicability of the exponential-tail model to disordered systems has long been debated. However, sub-gap absorption in organic semiconductors is found to be universally dominated by thermal broadening at low photon energies, with the Urbach energy equalling the thermal energy regardless of static disorder. Our findings provide insight into the meaning of the Urbach energy in molecular solids and present a strategy to determine excitonic disorder energy.
