Solvent effects on catalytic activity and selectivity in amine-catalyzed D-fructose isomerization

Peter Drabo et al.

Summary: Rational catalyst design and optimal solvent selection are crucial for the advancement of biorefining. In this study, the organocatalytic isomerization of D-fructose to D-allulose was explored, and the solvent was found to play a significant role in the selectivity of the reaction. The results suggest that the furanose tautomer of D-fructose is isomerized to D-allulose, and the highest yield of D-allulose, 14%, was obtained in DMF with TBD as the catalyst. The reaction kinetics and mechanism were investigated using operando NMR spectroscopy.

Pathways and their usage in the conversion of carbohydrates by aqueous barium hydroxide: insights from hyperpolarized and quantitative NMR

Allan R. E. Hansen et al.

Summary: The conversion of lignocellulosic biomass and its components to precursor chemicals offers great potential in expanding the range of industrial chemicals and reducing reliance on fossil resources. However, challenges in this green transition include the multifunctionality of biosourced reactants and the search for highly selective conversion processes. Recent research has shown that chemocatalytic conversion of carbohydrates to lactate and its ester variants using concentrated aqueous solutions of barium hydroxide is highly selective. This study used sensitive enhanced NMR to track the reaction cascade and identified key intermediates in the pathway, providing valuable insights into the process.

Aqueous Isomerization of Glucose to Fructose Catalyzed by Guanidinium Ionic Liquids

Xuan Li et al.

Summary: The isomerization of glucose to fructose is a crucial step in the conversion of cellulosic biomass to valuable biochemicals. However, current techniques suffer from low efficiency, yield, and selectivity. Therefore, the development of efficient catalytic systems for glucose isomerization is important. In this study, biodegradable guanidinium ionic liquids were synthesized and used for selective glucose isomerization. The results showed that the performance of the isomerization was influenced by the ionic liquids' basic strength and reaction conditions. Under optimized conditions, an impressive fructose yield of 34.1% was achieved in the presence of tetra methyl guanidinium proline ([TMG]Pro). The kinetic behavior and isotope labeling experiments revealed a deprotonation mechanism for glucose isomerization. This work provides new insights into selective glucose isomerization.

Kinetic Salt Effect on Base-Catalyzed Isomerization of d-Glucose into d-Fructose

Matthias Fischer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of salts on the base-catalyzed aqueous-phase isomerization of glucose to fructose. It is found that the addition of soluble salts can enhance the reaction rate, both in the presence of soluble base and solid bases as catalysts. The apparent activation energy and UV absorption spectra are not significantly affected by the addition of salts. Potentiometric titration shows that the presence of electrolytes increases the acidity constants of the saccharides, thereby accelerating the isomerization reaction.

What are the catalytically active species for aqueous-phase isomerization of D-glucose into D-fructose in the presence of alkaline earth metal (hydr)oxides?

Peter Drabo et al.

Summary: The isomerization of D-glucose into D-fructose in the presence of different metal (hydro)oxides as catalysts involves homogeneous catalysis by released hydroxide ions, with magnesium oxide being a stable generator of OH- during the reaction. Although various metal (hydro)oxides induce alkalinity differently, they all exhibit similar conversion-selectivity patterns, indicating a common catalytically active species OH-. The use of filtration and contact tests for estimating contributions of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis is comprehensively evaluated, noting potential deceptive results from the in situ generation of hydroxide ions during base-catalyzed isomerization.
