Boosting oxygen evolution over inverse spinel Fe-Co-Mn oxide nanocubes through electronic structure engineering

Zhuang Zeng et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the design and synthesis of highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution by tuning the d-band center of Fe-based inverse spinel oxides. The ternary Mn0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 nanocubes exhibit superior oxygen evolution activity compared to the benchmark RuO2. The optimized d-band center provides a balanced adsorption strength of intermediate *OOH on Mn0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 nanocubes, as confirmed by experimental and theoretical calculations.

A single-atom library for guided monometallic and concentration-complex multimetallic designs

Lili Han et al.

Summary: Single-atom catalysts have shown enhanced catalytic properties, but most studies have focused on a limited number of metal combinations. In this research, a library of 37 different monometallic elements is synthesized, characterized, and analyzed to establish the largest reported single-atom catalyst library. Unified principles on the design of single-atom catalysts are uncovered, and the library is utilized to explore complex multimetallic phase spaces. The findings demonstrate that single-atom anchor sites can serve as structural units to assemble concentration-complex single-atom catalyst materials with multiple elements.

Size effects and active state formation of cobalt oxide nanoparticles during the oxygen evolution reaction

Felix T. Haase et al.

Summary: This study utilizes operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy to track the catalytic activity and structural changes of CoOx(OH)(y) nanoparticles during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The research reveals the superior OER activity of sub-5 nm particles and a size-dependent contraction of Co-O bonds during OER. The study also finds that the accumulation of oxidative charge triggers electron redistribution and the formation of oxyl radicals as the predominant surface-terminating motif.

Facile Access to an Active γ-NiOOH Electrocatalyst for Durable Water Oxidation Derived From an Intermetallic Nickel Germanide Precursor

Prashanth W. Menezes et al.

Summary: In this study, intermetallic nickel germanide (NiGe) was identified as a superior Ni-based electro(pre)catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with enhanced catalytic activity and durability. Compared to other Ni-based intermetallic precatalysts under alkaline OER conditions, NiGe showed unexpected electroconversion into gamma-(NiOOH)-O-III with intercalated OH-/CO32- that served as a highly active structure.

Co-Fe-Cr (oxy)Hydroxides as Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalysts

Junsheng Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of doping chromium on the activity of cobalt (oxy)hydroxide catalysts through a combination of DFT calculations and catalyst characterization. The results show that the optimal Co5Fe3Cr2 (oxy)hydroxide exhibits superior performance in terms of high current density and turnover frequency. Analysis from X-ray absorption and photoelectron spectroscopies reveals that chromium promotes the distribution of cobalt atoms and modifies the electronic structure. Quasi-operando electron energy loss spectroscopy confirms that chromium accelerates the oxidation of Co2+ to higher valence species, leading to significantly higher catalytic activity.
