Oriented Growth of Thin Films of Covalent Organic Frameworks with Large Single-Crystalline Domains on the Water Surface

Zhaowei Ou et al.

Summary: This study presents a general strategy for the creation of 2D crystals of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) on the water surface, assisted by a charged polymer. Thin films of 2D COFs with large single-crystalline domains have been achieved, and key factors in the formation of larger single-crystalline domains are revealed. The synthesis method shows a high level of generality and has potential for further investigation and applications in electronics.

Irreversible synthesis of an ultrastrong two-dimensional polymeric material

Yuwen Zeng et al.

Summary: Polymers that extend covalently in two dimensions have attracted recent attention as a means of combining the mechanical strength and in-plane energy conduction of conventional two-dimensional (2D) materials with the low densities, synthetic processability and organic composition of their one-dimensional counterparts. Here we demonstrate a homogenous 2D irreversible polycondensation that results in a covalently bonded 2D polymeric material that is chemically stable and highly processable. Further processing yields highly oriented, free-standing films that have a 2D elastic modulus and yield strength of 12.7 +/- 3.8 gigapascals and 488 +/- 57 megapascals, respectively. This synthetic route provides opportunities for 2D materials in applications ranging from composite structures to barrier coating materials.

Observing polymerization in 2D dynamic covalent polymers

Gaolei Zhan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the polymerization and crystallization processes of two-dimensional polymers using in situ scanning tunnelling microscopy and molecular models. The qualitative and quantitative details of the nucleation-elongation processes are revealed, and important crystallization parameters are determined accurately. Additionally, abnormal grain growth is found to affect the 2D crystal growth.

Porous covalent organic nanotubes and their assembly in loops and toroids

Kalipada Koner et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of covalently bonded porous organic nanotubes (CONTs) with high thermal and chemical stability. Under ultrasonication, these CONTs form intertwined structures that eventually coil to form toroidal superstructures. Computational studies provide insight into the solvent effect on this assembly process.

Electroactive Covalent Organic Framework Enabling Photostimulus-Responsive Devices

Yizhou Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly crystalline electroactive two-dimensional covalent organic framework (2D COF) was designed and synthesized. By interfacial doping, the conductivity of an organic semiconductor was significantly increased. Encapsulating a photoswitchable molecule into the COF layer enabled the devices to respond differently to light of different wavelengths, effectively creating on and off states.

Study on the fluorescent covalent organic framework for selective turn-off recognition and detection of Fe3+ ions

Tian Zhang et al.

Summary: TT-COF exhibits high selectivity and fluorescence quenching towards Fe3+ in ethanol, with a low detection limit. The unique pore structure and coordination with Fe3+ ions contribute to its high selectivity, confirmed through methods like EDTA. The coordination of TT-COF and Fe3+ ion was further supported by XPS spectra and DFT calculation, highlighting its potential as a fluorescence sensor for specific metal ions.
