De novo inter-regional coactivations of preconfigured local ensembles support memory

Hiroyuki Miyawaki et al.

Summary: This study reveals that neuronal ensembles activated during fear memory acquisition in the amygdala, ventral hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex are inter-regionally coactivated during sleep, with the help of fast network oscillations. These coactivations reappear during memory retrieval. The ensembles in the amygdala and prefrontal cortex are configured prior to memory acquisition, while those in the hippocampus develop through experience.

DO HIPPOCAMPAL PYRAMIDAL CELLS RESPOND TO NONSPATIAL STIMULI?

John O'Keefe et al.

Summary: There are currently multiple theories regarding the function of the rodent hippocampus, with some emphasizing the importance of space in information processing, while others view the hippocampal function as more broad and equal in processing all types of information. Studies have reported single hippocampal unit responses to nonspatial stimuli, which have been interpreted as supporting the broader hippocampal function theory.
