Atomic force microscopy-A tool for structural and translational DNA research

Kavit H. S. Main et al.

Summary: Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a powerful imaging technique that allows for structural characterization of single biomolecules with nanoscale resolution in their native states. Innovations and optimizations in AFM imaging have advanced our understanding of DNA structure, mechanics, and interactions, providing insights into biological interactions and DNA-protein interactions. AFM also plays a broader role in translational cancer research by imaging DNA with chemotherapeutic ligands for clinical applications.

Unraveling the Mechanism of Ice Nucleation by Mica (001) Surfaces

Abhishek Soni et al.

Summary: Recent experiments have shown that some mica (001) surfaces can efficiently nucleate ice, with B-mica and H-mica being effective while K-mica is not. The surfaces stabilize a mixed-phase ice nucleus with a unique structure, different from traditional ice, consisting of hexagonal and cubic ice layers stacked in a specific order. The study highlights the relationship between surface composition, morphology, and ice nucleation, shedding new light on the process.

Ion exchange in atomically thin clays and micas

Yi-Chao Zou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of ion exchange in atomically thin materials, revealing that ion diffusion in few-layer two-dimensional clays approaches that of free water, and superlattice cation islands can form in twisted and restacked materials.

Visualization of Ion|Surface Binding and In Situ Evaluation of Surface Interaction Free Energies via Competitive Adsorption Isotherms

Pierluigi Bilotto et al.

Summary: The study investigates the interaction forces at interfaces by using a model system involving polymers interacting with a negatively charged mica surface. It is found that the measured adhesion decreases by around 90% as the electrolyte concentration increases from 0.01 to 1M. Furthermore, molecular resolution imaging demonstrates the increasing population of ions competing with functional groups for binding sites at higher concentrations.

Quest for a pristine unreconstructed SrTiO3(001) surface: An atomically resolved study via noncontact atomic force microscopy

Igor Sokolovic et al.

Summary: The study shows that the surface structure of perovskite oxides affects their functional properties. Experimentally, it was found that at higher temperatures, point defects on the surface migrate and the surface becomes disordered, while still maintaining a (1 x 1) pattern in low-energy electron diffraction.
