Saffron bioactives crocin, crocetin and safranal: effect on oxidative stress and mechanisms of action

Debora Cerda-Bernad et al.

Summary: This article discusses the antioxidant effects of saffron compounds and their mechanisms of action in reducing the generation of reactive oxygen species. These compounds have various biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antidiabetic effects. Due to their strong antioxidant effects, saffron could be a significant source for developing functional foods.

ERK/p38/ROS burst responses to environmentally relevant concentrations of diphenyl phosphate-evoked neutrophil extracellular traps formation: Assessing the role of autophagy

Siwen Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed that diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) could promote the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) by inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst and activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and p38, as well as triggering autophagy. Inhibition of autophagy could alleviate the ROS burst and subsequent NETosis caused by DPHP, while enhancing autophagy could augment these effects. This indicated that ERK/p38 signaling and ROS burst may play a crucial role in DPHP-induced NETs formation, and excessive autophagy suppression could rescue these actions.

A new FGF1 variant protects against adriamycin-induced cardiotoxicity via modulating p53 activity

Mengjie Xiao et al.

Summary: This study suggests that FGF1 may be a potential therapeutic agent against ADR-induced cardiotoxicity. Treatment with FGF1 & DEG; HBS can prevent ADR-induced cardiac dysfunction and associated inflammation, fibrosis, and hypertrophy. The protective effects of FGF1 & DEG; HBS are mediated through the inhibition of apoptosis and oxidative stress in cardiomyocytes.

Emerging role of PARP-1 and PARthanatos in ischemic stroke

Shuiqiao Liu et al.

Summary: Cell death is a crucial feature in neurological diseases, with PARP-1 and PARthanatos playing key roles in ischemic neuronal cell death and disease progression. Inhibition of PARP-1 shows potential therapeutic effects in stroke by reducing infarct volume and improving neurological recovery.

Natural exosome-like nanovesicles from edible tea flowers suppress metastatic breast cancer via ROS generation and microbiota modulation

Qiubing Chen et al.

Summary: This study developed a new therapeutic strategy using natural nanovehicles derived from tea flowers to trigger apoptosis of breast tumors and inhibit their lung metastasis. The nanovehicles had desirable particle sizes, exosome-like morphology, and contained polyphenols, flavonoids, functional proteins, and lipids. The experiments showed that the nanovehicles exhibited strong cytotoxicity against cancer cells by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). In addition, in mice investigations, the nanovehicles were found to accumulate in breast tumors and lung metastatic sites after injection or oral administration, resulting in inhibition of breast cancer growth and metastasis, as well as modulation of gut microbiota.
