Recent understanding of human milk oligosaccharides in establishing infant gut microbiome and roles in immune system

Ravindra Pal Singh et al.

Summary: Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are complex sugars present in breast milk, playing crucial roles in infant development by providing energy for gut microbes and directly modulating gut immune responses. Additionally, HMOs protect infants from infectious diseases by interacting with intestinal cells and inhibiting the binding of pathogenic bacteria and viruses.

Wheat supplement with buckwheat affect gut microbiome composition and circulate short-chain fatty acids

Di Yao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of wheat mixed with sweet or tartary buckwheat on gut microbes and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The results showed that the mixture with sweet buckwheat produced more propionate and butyrate, while the mixture with tartary buckwheat produced more lactate and acetate. Additionally, the mixture increased the relative abundance of some beneficial bacteria.

Effect of substrate load on anaerobic fermentation of rice straw with rumen liquid as inoculum: Hydrolysis and acidogenesis efficiency, enzymatic activities and rumen bacterial community structure

Jinsong Liang et al.

Summary: This study found that at a 10.0% rice straw load, the highest VFA concentration, mainly composed of acetic acid and propionic acid, was achieved, along with high SCOD concentration and enzyme activities. Lower diversity and richness of rumen bacteria were observed at this load compared to others. Bacteroides, Prevotella, and Ruminococcus were identified as the main rumen bacteria during rice straw degradation.

In vitro fermentation of chitooligosaccharides and their effects on human fecal microbial community structure and metabolites

Xiao-Guo Ji et al.

Summary: The study found that chitooligosaccharides (COS) increased the diversity of gut microbial community, particularly enriching butyric and propionic acid-producing microbiota. COS also regulated the production of various metabolites, suggesting its potential as raw materials for functional foods and health products.
