Structural characterization and tartary buckwheat polysaccharides alleviate insulin resistance by suppressing SOCS3-induced IRS1 protein degradation

Qiang Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanisms by which tartary buckwheat root polysaccharide (TBRP-1) treatment can alleviate diabetes mellitus. The results showed that TBRP-1 treatment enhanced glucose uptake in insulin resistant cells and lowered blood glucose levels and hepatic lipids in diabetic mice. The underlying molecular mechanisms involved the suppression of SOCS3 expression and enhancement of IRS1 expression, thus alleviating insulin resistance.

Proanthocyanidins from Chinese bayberry leaves reduce obesity and associated metabolic disorders in high-fat diet-induced obese mice through a combination of AMPK activation and an alteration in gut microbiota

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: A special type of proanthocyanidin extracted from Chinese bayberry leaves (BLPs) has been found to effectively prevent obesity induced by high-fat diet (HFD) in mice. BLPs activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and alter gut microbiota, reducing the expression of genes related to lipogenesis and increasing the expression of genes related to beta-oxidation. Moreover, BLPs improve gut dysbiosis induced by HFD and decrease circulating endotoxin levels.

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Metformin Action

Traci E. LaMoia et al.

Summary: Metformin is a commonly used first-line therapy for type 2 diabetes, mainly acting through inhibition of hepatic gluconeogenesis to lower blood glucose levels. Despite controversy over its mechanism of action, recent studies have supported a redox-dependent mechanism.

Therapeutic opportunities for pancreatic β-cell ER stress in diabetes mellitus

Summary: Diabetes mellitus can result from autoimmunity or insulin resistance leading to beta-cell failure, with critical gene mutations causing monogenic diabetes. The endoplasmic reticulum plays a crucial role in insulin secretion and storage, and ER stress is associated with the pathogenesis of diabetes.
