Loneliness in urbanising China

Summary: Despite the growing literature on loneliness, this study investigates the impact of urbanisation measures on residents' loneliness in China undergoing rural-urban transition. The results show that emotional loneliness and social loneliness have different patterns of association with urbanisation measures, with residence in temporary housing being a significant risk factor for social loneliness.

Green space and loneliness: A systematic review with theoretical and methodological guidance for future research

Summary: Persistent loneliness is a common problem across the life span, and urban greening may help reduce its impact on population health. However, existing evidence and conceptual models on the relationship between green space and loneliness are lacking. This systematic review integrates quantitative and qualitative studies to provide a comprehensive understanding of how different types of green space can influence different types of loneliness, and how various factors at personal, relational, and collective levels can affect the benefits or harms of green space. The review and model offer guidance for decision making and further research on the topic.

A neighbourhood of necessity: creating home and neighbourhood within subsidised aged housing in Durban, South Africa

Summary: The research findings suggest that due to the constraints of the built environment, residents have limited opportunities to create a sense of home, leading to feelings of disconnection and hindrance in forming a sense of neighborhood. Many residents struggle to adapt to their new lives, resulting in unintended social consequences such as loneliness, depression, conflict, stress, and sometimes even death. Recommendations emphasize the importance of design features that facilitate continuity from old life to new, the creation of functional and appealing social spaces, and collaborative design processes for future buildings.
