Drilling Performance of Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites: A Review

Khurshid Malik et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the past and present research studies of the drilling behavior of NFRCs and their hybrids, exploring various drilling techniques and parameters, as well as analyzing drill bit geometry and materials. The study highlights methods of improving drilling properties for these composites, including chemical treatment of natural fibers and optimizing drilling performance parameters.

Drilling of natural fiber-reinforced based polyurethane foam composite

Alessandro Ellenberger et al.

Summary: The combination of natural fibers and renewable source matrices can replace non-renewable materials in composites manufacturing. This study investigates the drilling process and its impact on surface damages and temperature in composites made of pinus sawdust and sisal fibers with a polyurethane foam derived from vegetable oils matrix. The results show that drilling parameters have an influence on the generation of damages, and lower cutting speed and feed rate are more suitable for drilling these types of composites.

Image processing method for delamination and fiber pull-out assessment during drilling of natural fiber composites

Muhammad Helmi Abdul Kudus et al.

Summary: Natural fiber-reinforced composites are promising alternative materials for modern moderate-to-high-technology products, but their heterogeneous structure can cause processing defects. Drilling of composites is essential for assembly, but can lead to delamination damage and fiber pull-out. A new image processing method has been developed to characterize these defects and investigate the effects of drilling parameters on them.

Effects of machining parameters on surface quality of composites reinforced with natural fibers

Raveen John et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of machining parameters on the surface quality of natural fiber reinforced composites during end milling, finding significant differences in silicon content and hardness values of different fibers impacting the surface quality. Kenaf/PP composites showed the lowest delamination damages and best surface finish, while RH/PP composites were the most challenging to machine. Spindle speed was found to have a greater influence on machined surface quality compared to feed rate for NFRCs.

Predicting the delamination factor in carbon fibre reinforced plastic composites during drilling through the Gaussian process regression

Yun Zhang et al.

Summary: CFRP is widely used in aircraft structural applications due to its superior properties, but drilling-induced delamination is a major concern. In this study, a GPR model is developed to predict delaminations in CFRP composites during drilling, which, combined with the Taguchi method, can provide faster optimization of machining processes with more quantitative data extracted from fewer experimental trials.

Investigation of Drilling Process Parameters of Palmyra Based Composite

A. Mohan Kumar et al.

Summary: The drilling process is crucial in the final assembly of mechanical parts. This study aimed to determine the minimum thrust force produced by the drill tool at specified drilling process parameters. The results showed that the candlestick drill bit generated the least thrust force at the specified drilling process parameters, followed by the twist and step cone drill bits.
