Comparison of the safety and immunogenicity of a novel Matrix-M-adjuvanted nanoparticle influenza vaccine with a quadrivalent seasonal influenza vaccine in older adults: a phase 3 randomised controlled trial

Vivek Shinde et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the immunological responses of the Matrix-M-adjuvanted quadrivalent nanoparticle influenza vaccine (qNIV) with a licensed, standard-dose quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV4) in older adults. The results showed that qNIV was immunologically non-inferior to IIV4, well tolerated, and produced enhanced immune responses in older adults, indicating potential effectiveness in seasonal influenza vaccination.

Epidemiology and Genotypic Diversity of Eurasian Avian-Like H1N1 Swine Influenza Viruses in China

Zhaomin Feng et al.

Summary: Eurasian avian-like H1N1 swine influenza viruses in China have shown a genotypic diversity with 11 genotypes, among which genotypes 3 and 5 are predominant in pig population. These viruses continuously reassort with other co-circulated influenza viruses and show different genetic characteristics.

Effect of Antigenic Drift on Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness in the United States-2019-2020

Mark W. Tenforde et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vaccine effectiveness against emerging influenza viruses during the 2019-2020 season in the United States. The results showed that the vaccine provided good protection against B/Victoria viruses, but lower effectiveness against A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses, mainly due to vaccine mismatch caused by antigenic drift. The study observed the impact of antigenic drift on vaccine protection, with significant protection still observed even in drifted years.

Distribution and evolution of H1N1 influenza A viruses with adamantanes-resistant mutations worldwide from 1918 to 2019

Weijun He et al.

Summary: H1N1 influenza viruses have exhibited high resistance to adamantanes, with mutant variants mainly appearing in North America and Europe, becoming circulating strains worldwide since 2009. The study found that 80.65% of human H1N1 influenza viruses and 74.61% of swine H1N1 influenza viruses exhibited adamantanes resistance, while the frequency was only 1.86% in avian H1N1 influenza viruses.

Structural Characterization and Modeling of a Respiratory Syncytial Virus Fusion Glycoprotein Nanoparticle Vaccine in Solution

Susan Krueger et al.

Summary: The RSV fusion protein/PS80 nanoparticle vaccine is an advanced vaccine for maternal immunization and protection of newborns against RSV infection. The structure and hydrodynamic properties of the vaccine were studied, revealing details of antigen presentation and nanoparticle assembly involving PS80 and RSV F trimers. This study demonstrates a general strategy for structurally characterizing nanoparticle vaccines using small-angle scattering methods.

Quadrivalent influenza nanoparticle vaccines induce broad protection

Seyhan Boyoglu-Barnum et al.

Summary: Computational design of nanoparticle immunogens can induce potent and broad antibody responses against diverse influenza viruses, including neutralizing antibody responses to vaccine-matched strains and broadly protective antibody responses to heterologous viruses. These novel vaccines have the potential to replace traditional seasonal vaccines.

Co-circulation of multiple influenza A reassortants in swine harboring genes from seasonal human and swine influenza viruses

Pia Ryt-Hansen et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of swIAV surveillance in Danish swine from 2011 to 2018, revealing multiple different circulating genotypes of the virus, including novel reassortants with human seasonal IAV gene segments. The phylogenetic analysis showed genetic drift in antigenic sites of the hemagglutinin protein and identified a swine divergent cluster among the viruses studied.
