Whole-Genome Analysis Reveals That Bacteriophages Promote Environmental Adaptation of Staphylococcus aureus via Gene Exchange, Acquisition, and Loss

Wenyuan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study conducted phylogenetic and comparative analysis of Staphylococcus aureus bacteriophages using genome sequence data. The results showed that the bacteriophages could be divided into three lineages and shared similar mosaic structures and core ortholog clusters within the subdividing clusters. The genetic diversity of S. aureus bacteriophages was likely a result of gene replacement, acquisition, and loss, and may have crossed species barriers.

The Role of hlb-Converting Bacteriophages in Staphylococcus aureus Host Adaption

Carina Rohmer et al.

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus, an opportunistic pathogen, colonizes the nasal cavity asymptomatically in humans and animals, causing life-threatening infections. The evolution of S. aureus is closely associated with mobile genetic elements, including temperate phages carrying virulence genes. Sa3int phages play a crucial role in regulating virulence factor expression and bacterial survival within different hosts, with prophage insertion and excision potentially conferring fitness advantages. The unique life cycle of Sa3int phages, involving active lysogeny, remains poorly understood but is likely finely tuned to ensure bacterial survival.
