Nipah Virus-Another Threat From the World of Zoonotic Viruses

Krzysztof Skowron et al.

Summary: Among diseases, viral diseases pose a significant threat to public health. The Nipah virus (NiV), a highly lethal virus with zoonotic nature and potential human-to-human transmission, is recognized as a global health problem. NiV infection causes neurological symptoms and severe respiratory disorders. Bats of Pteropus species are considered the primary natural reservoir and vector. Transmission routes include consumption of contaminated food, contact with animals, and human-to-human contact. Currently, treatment options for NiV are limited to supportive and prophylactic measures.

Disentangling the Legal and Illegal Wildlife Trade-Insights from Indonesian Wildlife Market Surveys

Vincent Nijman et al.

Summary: Based on empirical data collected during wildlife market surveys in Indonesia, this study examines violations of domestic legislation in terms of protected species, harvest quota, welfare, transport restrictions, and illegal importation of CITES-listed species. The findings highlight the importance of conducting wildlife trade surveys and urge the government to take appropriate action to curb illegal aspects of the bird trade in Indonesia.

A short communication of Nipah virus outbreak in India: An urgent rising concern

Olivier Uwishema et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Bangladesh, and India have reported cases of Nipah virus (NiV) infection. The recent re-emergence of NiV in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, India has caused concern among the population already dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. This manuscript aims to discuss the NiV infection in India and provide recommendations to contain and mitigate its impact on affected populations.

Pandemics Throughout History

Jocelyne Piret et al.

Summary: Throughout history, infectious diseases with pandemic potential have emerged regularly, including major events like the plague, cholera, flu, SARS, and MERS. Many of these diseases are zoonotic in nature, transmitted to humans through increased contact with animals. Understanding the mechanisms of pathogen transmission is crucial for prevention, and traditional public health measures like isolation, quarantine, and border control are still being used to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Global surveillance programs and new technologies are essential for rapid detection and response to emerging infectious threats.

Tackling zoonoses in a crowded world: Lessons to be learned from the COVID-19 pandemic

Alex Cordoba-Aguilar et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 zoonosis highlights the importance of transforming human interactions with nature and wildlife, as well as the urgent need for preventive measures to combat zoonotic diseases. Governments worldwide must work towards protecting natural environments, biodiversity, and banning the illegal use of wildlife to prevent future pandemics.

The Ecology and Evolution of Japanese Encephalitis Virus

Peter Mulvey et al.

Summary: Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is mainly spread by Culex mosquitoes, causing Japanese encephalitis with high mortality. Pigs serve as amplifying hosts in outbreaks, while the role of other animals in JEV ecology remains unclear. Despite available vaccines, low uptake and climate change may contribute to further spread of Culex vectors.

Mammals, wildlife trade, and the next global pandemic

K. Nagaraju Shivaprakash et al.

Summary: Most new infectious diseases emerge when pathogens transfer from animals to humans. The risk of carrying zoonotic diseases is not equal for all mammal species in wildlife trade, and mitigation measures should prioritize species with the highest risk of carrying zoonotic viruses. Curbing the sales of wildlife products and developing principles that support sustainable and healthy wildlife trade could help prevent future zoonotic outbreaks.

Animal sales from Wuhan wet markets immediately prior to the COVID-19 pandemic

Xiao Xiao et al.

Summary: The study documents the sale of 47,381 individuals from 38 species in Wuhan's markets, noting the absence of pangolins and bats which supports the theory that they are not the source of the COVID-19 pandemic. China implemented a temporary ban on wildlife trade and a permanent ban on eating and trading terrestrial wild animals to protect human health, address past inconsistencies, and benefit global biodiversity conservation and animal welfare.
