Multiple variants of African swine fever virus circulating in Vietnam

Van Tam Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study genetically characterized the African swine fever virus (ASFV) strains circulating in Vietnam and identified the presence of three variants, with IGR II being the most prevalent. This is the first report of IGR III variants in Vietnam.

A systematic review of genotypes and serogroups of African swine fever virus

Hailong Qu et al.

Summary: African swine fever virus (ASFV) is the causative agent of African swine fever (ASF), causing a highly fatal disease in domestic pigs with genetic and antigenic diversity. This review discusses the progress in genotyping and serogrouping ASFV and highlights how this information aids in rapid virus origin identification during ASF outbreaks and the development of ASF vaccines.

African swine fever control and prevention: an update on vaccine development

Ana Catarina Urbano et al.

Summary: African swine fever (ASF) is a lethal and highly contagious viral disease that poses a serious threat to the global swine industry. Although progress has been made in vaccine development, there are still challenges to overcome, such as cross-protection, safety, and the lack of suitable animal models.

Molecular Characterization of African Swine Fever Virus From 2019-2020 Outbreaks in Guangxi Province, Southern China

Kaichuang Shi et al.

Summary: This study characterized the molecular features of African swine fever virus (ASFV) strains circulating in Guangxi province, southern China. The results revealed high genetic diversity among the ASFV strains, with the co-circulation of different genotypes and serogroups, as well as the presence of wild-type and gene-deleted strains in the field.

Detection of African Swine Fever at an Abattoir in South Korea, 2020

Ki-Hyun Cho et al.

Summary: A suspect case of African swine fever (ASF) was detected in October 2020 at an abattoir in the north-central border region of South Korea. The farm of origin was confirmed positive for ASF. The identical isolates from 2020 and 2019 indicate the continued spread and circulation of ASF in the wild boar population, posing an increased risk of outbreaks in domestic pigs. Therefore, additional control measures should be implemented in the region.

Rapid emergence of African swine fever virus variants with different numbers of a tandem repeat sequence in South Korea

Seon-Hee Kim et al.

Summary: Variants of African swine fever virus with different numbers of a 10-bp tandem repeat were isolated in South Korea shortly after being identified in wild boars. The short emergence periods and shared distribution within a narrow geographical region suggest that these variants were sporadically generated within the pre-existing viral population.

Circulation of two different variants of intergenic region (IGR) located between the I73R and I329L genes of African swine fever virus strains in Vietnam

Ha Thi Thanh Tran et al.

Summary: Most ASFV strains detected in Vietnam since 2019 belong to the p72 genotype II and intergenic region II variant. Further investigation in the Capital Hanoi region revealed the co-circulation of two different variants, IGR I and IGR II, in the domestic pig population.

Surveillance of ASF-infected pig farms from September to October 2019 in South Korea

Ki-hyun Cho et al.

Summary: Fourteen outbreaks of African swine fever occurred in pig farms in the northwestern region of South Korea, near the border with North Korea, from September 16, 2019 to October 9, 2019. Active and passive surveillance showed that the infection was limited to pigsties where the infected pigs were first detected, leading to prompt eradication of ASF within one month.
