Evolution of SARS-CoV-2 during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Northwestern Argentina

Romina Zambrana Montano et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the introduction and diversification patterns of SARS-CoV-2 in Northwestern Argentina during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed the presence of eight lineages in the first wave, which were later replaced by variants of concern and other lineages in the early second wave. The study also found that the evolutionary rate of one of the most prevalent lineages in the region was faster than that of another lineage.

Rapid epidemic expansion of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant in southern Africa

Raquel Viana et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in southern Africa has experienced three distinct waves, driven by different variants. The recently identified Omicron variant has rapidly spread in South Africa and to numerous countries, raising global concern.

Effectiveness of rAd26-rAd5, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, and BBIBP-CorV vaccines for risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2 and death due to COVID-19 in people older than 60 years in Argentina: a test-negative, case-control, and retrospective longitudinal study

Analia Rearte et al.

Summary: The study conducted in Argentina demonstrated that the rAd26-rAd5, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, and BBIBP-CorV vaccines, when administered to individuals aged 60 and above, effectively reduced the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 deaths.

BA.2.12.1, BA.4 and BA.5 escape antibodies elicited by Omicron infection

Yunlong Cao et al.

Summary: Omicron sublineages BA.2.12.1, BA.4 and BA.5 have higher transmissibility and increased evasion of neutralizing antibodies compared to the BA.2 lineage. They exhibit similar binding affinities to the ACE2 receptor as BA.2. BA.1 infection after vaccination boosts humoral immune memory against wild-type SARS-CoV-2, but these antibodies are largely evaded by BA.2 and BA.4/BA.5 variants.

Omicron BA.4/BA.5 escape neutralizing immunity elicited by BA.1 infection

Khadija Khan et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron sub-lineages BA.4 and BA.5, first identified in South Africa, have mutations in the spike receptor binding domain compared to BA.1. Experimental results show that BA.4 and BA.5 have reduced neutralization against BA.1 in unvaccinated individuals, but this effect is less pronounced in vaccinated individuals.

Summary: In a large cohort study in England, it was found that COVID-19 cases with the Omicron sub-lineage BA.2 had lower or similar risks of death, hospital admission, and any hospital attendance compared to the BA.1 sub-lineage.

Cost-Effective Method to Perform SARS-CoV-2 Variant Surveillance: Detection of Alpha, Gamma, Lambda, Delta, Epsilon, and Zeta in Argentina

Carolina Torres et al.

Summary: Argentina conducted surveillance on SARS-CoV-2 variants, identifying Gamma and Lambda as the main variants, along with Alpha, Zeta, Epsilon, and more recently Delta. These variants predominated in different regions, with the emergence of Delta towards the end of the second wave, replacing Gamma and Lambda.
