Characterization of Influenza D Virus in Danish Calves

Nicole B. Goecke et al.

Summary: This study is the first to characterize IDV in calves in Denmark, and it shows that IDV is mainly transmitted through the movement of calves and there are different lineages of the virus.

Cattle influenza D virus in Brazil is divergent from established lineages

Mariana S. da Silva et al.

Summary: Influenza D virus (IDV) is a widely prevalent virus that can infect various hosts, including cattle. A recent study in Brazil identified IDV for the first time and found significant genetic divergence from previously described IDVs on other continents. This molecular description of IDV in South America is a crucial first step in understanding IDV infections in cattle in Brazil and surrounding countries, particularly in regions with a significant beef industry.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of IDV in nasal swab samples collected from cattle with BRD between 2012 and 2021, and identified the circulation of D/Yama2019 and D/Bursa2013 (a new lineage) in Turkey. The study also highlighted the differences in nucleotide and amino acid substitutions among different lineages of IDV.

Emerging Influenza D virus infection in European livestock as determined in serology studies: Are we underestimating its spread over the continent?

Maria Gaudino et al.

Summary: IDV is a novel orthomyxovirus first isolated in the United States in 2011, now circulating in a broad host range including cattle, swine, feral swine, and horses. Serological investigations in Europe have provided insights into viral diffusion in different countries, suggesting cattle as the primary host for IDV. Commercial livestock trade may play a role in the observed differences in IDV seroprevalence between countries.

The first decade of research advances in influenza D virus

Jieshi Yu et al.

Summary: Influenza D virus (IDV) has been detected in cattle and swine populations worldwide since its initial isolation in the USA in 2011. IDV has exceptional thermal and acid stability and a broad host range, mainly utilizing cattle as its reservoir and amplification host with potential to infect other mammalian species. IDV infection can cause mild to moderate respiratory illnesses in cattle and has been linked to bovine respiratory disease complex, with increasing evidence suggesting its potential to infect humans.

Enhanced Pathogenesis Caused by Influenza D Virus and Mycoplasma bovis Coinfection in Calves: a Disease Severity Linked with Overexpression of IFN-γ as a Key Player of the Enhanced Innate Immune Response in Lungs

Adrien Lion et al.

Summary: A study on the effects of coinfection with influenza D virus (IDV) and Mycoplasma bovis in cattle found that the combined infection led to shortened incubation period, worsened disease severity, and increased pathological lesions. IDV promoted M. bovis colonization of the lower respiratory tract and increased white cell recruitment to the airway lumen. Transcriptomic analysis highlighted upregulation of immune genes in the lungs of coinfected calves, particularly the IFN-gamma gene, indicating a strong innate immune response in the lower respiratory tract.
