Molecular and morphological investigations on the renal mechanisms enabling euryhalinity of red stingray Hemitrygon akajei

Naotaka Aburatani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular mechanisms of dilute urine production in the kidney of Japanese red stingray when transferred from seawater to low-salinity environments. The results showed that the stingray maintained high levels of plasma NaCl and urea by reabsorbing more osmolytes in the kidney when acclimating to low salinity. Gene analyses revealed the upregulation of genes involved in osmolyte reabsorption, supporting enhanced urea reabsorption and dilute urine production in freshwater-acclimated individuals.

Ion Transporters and Osmoregulation in the Kidney of Teleost Fishes as a Function of Salinity

Marius Takvam et al.

Summary: Euryhaline teleosts undergo significant renal function changes when transitioning between freshwater and seawater environments, adapting to fluctuations in salinity. Studies have described basic patterns at the organismal level, but recent research has focused on regulation at the cell and molecular level, with a particular emphasis on renal transporters. Future research should aim to integrate changes in renal reabsorption and ion secretion with transporter function at the cellular and molecular level in different regions of the nephrons.
