A New Bent-Toed Gecko of the Cyrtodactylus marmoratus Group Reptilia: Gekkonidae) from Obi Island, Indonesia

Awal Riyanto et al.

Summary: Based on phylogenetic and morphological evidence, a new species of Cyrtodactylus is described from Obi Island in the northern Moluccas, Indonesia. It is genetically and morphologically similar to the Melanesian species Cyrtodactylus papuensis but can be distinguished by its larger body size, fewer midbody scale rows, deep precloacal groove in males, and arrangement of femoral scales. This new species is also genetically divergent from C. papuensis.

GroupStruct: An R Package for Allometric Size Correction

Kin Onn Chan et al.

Summary: This article introduces an allometric growth model for correcting ontogenetic body size variation, and extends its application from intraspecific to interspecific datasets through an easy-to-use software package. The study finds that choosing the appropriate size correction method is crucial for downstream analysis results and biological interpretations.

The biogeography of bent-toed geckos, Cyrtodactylus (Squamata: Gekkonidae)

L. Lee Grismer et al.

Summary: The genus Cyrtodactylus is the third largest vertebrate genus on earth, with over 300 species spread across at least eight biogeographic regions. Ancestral ranges were reconstructed on a mitochondrial phylogeny, indicating that Cyrtodactylus evolved in the proto-Himalaya region and diversified in Indoburma and Indochina.

A standardized and statistically defensible framework for quantitative morphological analyses in taxonomic studies

Kin Onn Chan et al.

Summary: Although widely recognized methods such as body size correction and statistical hypothesis testing are not consistently applied in taxonomic studies, the use of a standardized and statistically defensible framework can enhance the workflow of morphological analyses. The proposed 5-step approach, accompanied by an easy-to-use companion R script, is particularly useful for identifying diagnostic characters for species diagnoses in a more robust integrative taxonomic framework.

Convergent evolution of karst habitat preference and its ecomorphological correlation in three species of Bent-toed Geckos (Cyrtodactylus) from Peninsular Malaysia

Amanda Kaatz et al.

Summary: By studying ecomorphology in the context of phylogeny, researchers can distinguish similarities due to common ancestry from those due to convergence. It was found that some species in the sworderi group and swamp Glade group exhibit convergent ecomorphological traits.

Faces in the Stone: Further Finds of Anthropomorphic Engravings Suggest a Discrete Artistic Tradition Flourished in Timor-Leste in the Terminal Pleistocene

Sue O'Connor et al.

Summary: The researchers reported two new engraving sites from the Tutuala region of Timor-Leste, mostly featuring humanoid forms, with previous discoveries of similar engraved face motifs in the Lene Hara Cave. These engravings may have served as markers of territorial and social identity during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene, coinciding with population expansion and increased inter-group contacts.
