Surgical treatment of mechanical bowel obstruction: characteristics and outcomes of geriatric patients compared to a younger cohort

Summary: This study aimed to compare the characteristics and outcomes of geriatric and non-geriatric patients undergoing surgery for mechanical bowel obstruction. The results showed that geriatric patients had higher mortality and complication rates, as well as longer hospital stays. Geriatric patients with large bowel obstruction had a higher rate of bowel resection and stoma creation. Additionally, the time from admission to surgery did not affect the outcomes of (geriatric) patients.

Diagnosis and management of small bowel obstruction in virgin abdomen: a WSES position paper

Summary: The etiology and treatment outcomes for patients with small bowel obstruction in the virgin abdomen (SBO-VA) are comparable to those in patients with SBO after previous abdominal surgery. A relatively high number of cases of SBO-VA are managed surgically, but non-operative management has also shown success. Therefore, patients with a virgin abdomen can potentially be treated according to existing guidelines for SBO and adhesive small bowel obstruction.
