Production of biosurfactants from agro-industrial waste and waste cooking oil in a circular bioeconomy: An overview

Vivek K. Gaur et al.

Summary: Waste generation is a global concern due to its negative impacts on the environment and human health. Utilizing waste as a feedstock for value-added product production contributes to environmental sustainability, especially when microorganisms are used to produce biosurfactants from waste streams. This reduces costs and allows the biosurfactants to be utilized in various environmental and industrial sectors.

Production of kombucha-like beverage and bacterial cellulose by acerola byproduct as raw material

Eduardo Leonarski et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that using acerola byproduct in the production of kombucha-like beverage can enhance the formation of ethanol, acetic acid, and bacterial cellulose. Higher amounts of acerola byproduct led to accelerated yeast metabolism, increased acetic acid concentration, and improved environment for bacterial cellulose production.

Detection of simultaneous production of kurstakin, fengycin and surfactin lipopeptides in Bacillus mojavensis using a novel gel-based method and MALDI-TOF spectrometry

Maryam Fanaei et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method for the purification and characterization of anionic lipopeptides, allowing for in-depth research on these molecules. It was found that Bacillus mojavensis HF produces three types of lipopeptides, including surfactin, fengycin, and kurstakin. The study also identified a high variety and number of surfactin and fengycin isomers, as well as reported the presence of kurstakin in the Bacillus mojavensis species for the first time. The gel-based study of lipopeptides demonstrated precise and reproducible investigation of these molecules.

Iron-Stimulated Production and Antimicrobial Potential of a Novel Biosurfactant Produced by a Drilling Waste-Degrading Pseudomonas citronellolis Strain

Argyro Tsipa et al.

Summary: A strain of Pseudomonas citronellolis was isolated from drilling waste and used to produce biosurfactants. The addition of FeCl3 was found to enhance BS production and waste degradation. The partially purified BS showed antimicrobial properties against multi-drug resistant bacteria, suggesting a cost-effective and sustainable bioprocess with potential applications in antibiotic and disinfectant fields.

A prospection on membrane-based strategies for downstream processing of surfactin

Renata Vicente et al.

Summary: Surfactin is a powerful biosurfactant with various properties, but its industrial application is hindered by high production costs. Two-step ultrafiltration using polymeric membranes offers high recovery yield and purity for Surfactin, but the potential of ceramic membranes remains unexplored. Ceramic membranes have higher chemical resistance and economic attractiveness for long-term operation.
