A coagulation-flocculation process combined with continuous adsorption using eggshell waste materials for phenols and PAHs removal from landfill leachate

Summary: A sequential treatment method consisting of coagulation/flocculation and transport column experiments was successfully used to treat landfill leachate containing phenols and PAHs. The addition of alum as coagulant greatly reduced the levels of TSS, COD, total phenols, and total PAHs. Calcined eggshell material showed promising adsorption properties, especially when used in combination with GAC, achieving over 80% removal of phenols and PAHs.

Treatment of landfill leachate with different techniques: an overview

Summary: Landfill leachate is characterized by high chemical and biological oxygen demand, containing undesirable substances such as organic and inorganic contaminants. Different treatments including biological methods like bioreactors, bioremediation, and physicochemical approaches like advanced oxidation processes, adsorption, and membrane filtration have been investigated for treating landfill leachate. Combined treatment techniques have shown good performance in removing pollutants such as ammonia, nitrogen, suspended solids, turbidity, and metals from landfill leachate.
