The Extent of Heavy Metal Pollution by Chemical Partitioning and Risk Assessment Code of Sediments of Sewage-Fed Fishery Ponds at East Kolkata Wetland, a Ramsar Site, India

Pratap Mukherjee et al.

Summary: This study examines the partitioning of heavy metals lead, cadmium, and chromium in pond sediments in East Kolkata Wetlands. The results show that lead and chromium are significantly present in the Fe-Mn bound fractions, while the residual fraction is highest for lead, followed by chromium and cadmium. The easily available fraction is highest for cadmium and chromium. Risk assessment analysis suggests that these metals pose a potential risk for higher mobility and availability in pond ecosystems, which is a significant concern for aquaculture products.

Similar zooplankton responses to low pH and calcium may impair long-term recovery from acidification

Alexander J. Ross et al.

Summary: Industrial emissions in the 20th century led to widespread lake acidification, causing declines in biodiversity. Declining calcium concentrations may hinder the recovery of zooplankton communities in acid-damaged lakes. Low calcium has similar effects on zooplankton as acidification, preventing the re-establishment of acid-structured communities.

Eco-bioengineering tools in ecohydrological assessment of eutrophic water bodies

Bishal Paul et al.

Summary: Eutrophication and deterioration of water quality are emerging environmental crises. Recent restoration studies have shown a global trend of combining traditional restoration methods with innovative techniques. This review introduces a novel approach to evaluate eutrophication through ecohydrological assessment and emphasizes the evolution of classical biomanipulation practices into eco-bioengineering methods. The study reveals a continuation of classical biomanipulation practices and an increasing focus on eco-bioengineering research in the last decade. The analysis also highlights the effectiveness and ecological resilience of eco-bioengineering methods in addressing eutrophication and fluctuating environmental flows.

Modelling the mixed impacts of multiple invasive alien fish species in a closed freshwater ecosystem in India

Giri Bhavan Sreekanth et al.

Summary: Invasive alien species have significant impacts on the trophic organisation and food web structure in ecosystems. Using the Ecopath with Ecosim modelling platform, this study examined the effects of three invasive fish species on a tropical freshwater pond ecosystem in India. The study found that these invasive species competed with native fish species and had negative impacts on other functional groups in the ecosystem.

Experimental observation on the effects of bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) on the plankton and water quality in ponds

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of stocking bighead carp at different densities on water quality and plankton community. The results showed that total phosphorus and chlorophyll-a concentration decreased in the fish-containing groups. The diversity of crustacean zooplankton was weakly affected by the presence of carp.

Ecological health and water quality of village ponds in the subtropics limiting their use for water supply and groundwater recharge

V. C. Goyal et al.

Summary: The study assesses the water quality and ecological health of twelve sub-tropical village ponds in western Uttar Pradesh, India, highlighting hypertrophic conditions and the need for significant investments in wastewater treatment. Decentralised systems such as septic tanks and constructed wetlands are proposed to reduce organic and nutrient loads entering village ponds and allow for a wider range of uses.

Role of external inputs of nutrients to aquatic ecosystems in determining prevalence of nitrogen vs. phosphorus limitation of net primary productivity

R. W. Howarth et al.

Summary: The net primary productivity in aquatic ecosystems can be limited by nitrogen, phosphorus, or both, depending on the relative supply of N and P compared to the elemental needs of phytoplankton. External and watershed nutrient inputs play a significant role in determining nutrient limitation, with a balanced supply of N and P relative to the Redfield ratio often leading to co-limitation. Coastal ocean sources of nutrients with a low N:P ratio may make nitrogen limitation more likely in coastal marine ecosystems compared to lakes.

Changing climate and land use of 21st century influences soil erosion in India

Subodh Chandra Pal et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the spatial extent and distribution of soil erosion caused by land cover and climate change. By providing a detailed soil erosion map, the study reveals the importance of climate and land cover change in controlling soil erosion, as well as the impact of human activities across the country. The projected soil loss estimation indicates that unless human activities and climate change are controlled, a significant percentage of land surface will erode top soil at a high rate by the year 2100.
