Enhanced ballistic resistance of multilayered cross-ply UHMWPE laminated plates

Rui Zhang et al.

Summary: Multi-layered cross-ply UHMWPE laminated plates were explored for ballistic performance, with good agreement between finite element simulations and experimental measurements. Multi-layering the target relieved fiber tensile stresses and generated a more significant pull-in effect, resulting in increased back-face deflection and enhanced ballistic resistance.

Constructing highly oriented and condensed shish-kebab crystalline structure of HDPE/UHMWPE blends via intense stretching process: Achieving high mechanical properties and in-plane thermal conductivity

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a designed intense stretching process was used to construct a highly oriented and condensed shish-kebab crystalline structure, which improved the mechanical properties and in-plane thermal conductivity of the HDPE/UHMWPE blends. By introducing disentangled UHMWPE chains and utilizing multistage stretching extrusion and uniaxial stretching, the tensile strength, Young's modulus, and in-plane thermal conductivity of the blends were significantly increased. This research provides a new perspective on the application of high-performance polyethylene blends.

Ballistic performance of boron carbide nanoparticles reinforced ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)

Naiara Pirahi da Silva Chagas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reinforcement of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with boron carbide nanoparticles (NPs) and its effect on mechanical properties and ballistic performance. The results show that the addition of B4C NPs can significantly enhance the dynamic mechanical properties and thermal stability of the nanocomposite. In particular, the nanocomposite with 0.05 wt% B4C NPs exhibits the lowest bullet penetration depth, indicating its potential for personal armor applications.

Influence of ceramic properties on the ballistic performance of the hybrid ceramic-multi-layered UHMWPE composite armour

Marzena Fejdys et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the ballistic resistance of hybrid ceramic multi-layered UHMWPE composite armor under different thicknesses and materials. It was found that the ballistic behavior of the armor is not only related to hardness, brittle fracturing, and Young's modulus, but also closely linked to acoustic impedance and resistance to brittle fracturing of the ceramic plates.
