Carbon nanotubes/activated carbon hybrid as a high-performance suspension electrode for the electrochemical desalination of wastewater

Kuan-Yu Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance of flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) for wastewater desalination was significantly improved by adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The addition of CNTs led to a higher salt removal rate and improved charge transfer. Increasing the initial salt concentration also resulted in a higher salt removal rate but decreased charge efficiency. Overall, adding CNTs proved to be an effective way to enhance the performance of FCDI for sustainable wastewater desalination.

Flow-electrode capacitive deionization utilizing three-dimensional foam current collector for real seawater desalination

Xinyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional carbon coated nickel foam was used as a current collector in a flow-electrode capacitive deionization (CF-FCDI) device to enhance the charge transfer ability and achieve excellent desalination efficiency for real seawater. Compared with traditional current collectors, the three-dimensional foam current collector showed evident competitiveness, as it enlarged the charge contact area and eliminated the charging range restriction. The CF-FCDI device demonstrated outstanding desalination performance when treating simulated and real seawater samples.

The impact of concentration in electrolyte on ammonia removal in flow-electrode capacitive deionization system

Kuo Fang et al.

Summary: This study found that the influence of activated carbon content on ion removal in FCDI systems is negligible, while the initial ammonium ion concentration significantly affects system performance. It is recommended to use initial CF below 10 and refresh the flow-electrode when CF exceeds 100 for efficient ammonia removal and enrichment.

Understanding the performance of flow-electrodes for capacitive deionization through hydrodynamic voltammetry

Aranzazu Carmona-Orbezo et al.

Summary: Flow-electrode capacitive deionization is a promising desalination technology that can be scaled up by optimizing the electrochemical performance of carbon slurries. Experimental results show that the apparent viscosity of the slurries and the effect of shear thinning on the migration of activated carbon particles should be considered for improved deionization efficiency.

Summary: This study used computational simulation to investigate the charge transfer process of carbon particles in slurry electrodes, and found that the flow rate affects the charge transfer process. The results showed that the electrical conductivity of the slurry electrode decreases with increased velocity in a parallel plate electrode configuration, and increases with higher particle concentration.

Novel strategy to enhance the desalination performance of flow-electrode capacitive deionization process via the assistance of electro-catalytic water splitting

Zonglin Pan et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel FCDI system using porous nickel foam as the current collector was constructed, and its desalination performance was enhanced by electro-catalytic water splitting. The functionalized current collectors showed improved desalination efficiency and charge efficiency, with lower energy consumption. The enhancement in desalination performance was attributed to improved conductivity in the flow-electrode chamber due to enhanced electro-catalytic water splitting reaction.

In situ potential measurement in a flow-electrode CDI for energy consumption estimation and system optimization

Liang Luo et al.

Summary: The study investigates the energy consumption distribution within a flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) system through in situ potential measurement (ISPM), revealing that the flow electrodes dominate the energy consumption. Increasing carbon black content in flow electrodes can enhance energy efficiency, but consideration should be given to the contribution of ion exchange membranes (IEMs) and the desalination chamber. System optimization strategies, such as introducing IEMs with lower resistance and packing the desalination chamber with titanium meshes, can increase desalination capability and reduce energy consumption, overcoming the tradeoff between kinetic and energetic efficiencies.
