Performance and dynamics of active greywater heat recovery in buildings

Bruno Hadengue et al.

Summary: In Switzerland, heat pumps are increasingly used to de-carbonize the building stock, with 70% using ambient air as heat source, although less efficient compared to ground or water-source heat pumps. A modeling study showed that utilizing domestic greywater can improve the efficiency of air-source heat pumps, with closed-loop systems showing the highest performance improvement potential.

City-wide model-based analysis of heat recovery from wastewater using an uncertainty-based approach

R. Saagi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of four different heat recovery locations on a Swedish city using a model-based approach. The results show that installing heat exchangers at household showers can recover a significant amount of heat energy and lower the inlet temperature of the wastewater treatment plant. Recovering wastewater flow at the precinct level further improves the cooling effect. The impact on the nitration capacity of the wastewater treatment plant is negligible.

Screening innovative technologies for energy-efficient domestic hot water systems

Bruno Hadengue et al.

Summary: This study selected and simulated five different technologies for domestic hot water systems and compared their energy performance. The results showed that low-flow appliances and the combination of low-flow appliances with a membrane bioreactor heat exchanger were the most energy-efficient. The study also analyzed the temperature dynamics in the system and identified technological competition and synergies.

Conserving stream fishes with changing climate: Assessing fish responses to changes in habitat over a large region

Yinphan Tsang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method to assess the impact of climate change on fish habitat by considering the responses of multiple fish species to changes in thermal and hydrological habitats. Results show that approximately 45.7% of stream reaches and 49.3% of the total stream length are expected to change their class under future climate conditions.

Impact of wastewater heat recovery in buildings on the performance of centralized energy recovery - A case study of Stockholm

Farzin Golzar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potentially disruptive impacts of upscaling local wastewater heat recovery on the performance of wastewater treatment and district heating systems in Stockholm. The findings suggest that enhanced heat recovery in buildings could have disruptive impacts on currently centralized energy and water service provision, highlighting the need for closer consideration of the balance between local and system-level solutions.

Plant-wide modelling and analysis of WWTP temperature dynamics for sustainable heat recovery from wastewater

Magnus Arnell et al.

Summary: Wastewater heat recovery up-stream of WWTPs poses a risk to treatment performance, requiring detailed prediction of temperature dynamics and comprehensive heat balance equations for analysis. Developing a detailed model for excess heat generation in biological processes is essential for predicting temperature variations and maintaining treatment efficiency.
