Groundwater-surface water interactions and flux of organic matter and nutrients in an urban, Mediterranean stream

Natalie Mladenov et al.

Summary: The chemical quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the speciation of nitrogen exported from urban catchments is of great importance to biogeochemical cycling in riverine and coastal receiving waters. This study investigated the changes in concentrations of inorganic and organic solutes and DOM optical properties in Alvarado Creek, a perennially-flowing, urban, first-order tributary of the San Diego River in San Diego, CA, USA, during dry weather conditions and storm events. The results suggest that the supply of DOM and TDN was not exhausted over the duration of a storm event, whereas nitrate was eventually depleted.

Dosing the Coast: Leaking Sewage Infrastructure Delivers Large Annual Doses and Dynamic Mixtures of Pharmaceuticals to Urban Rivers

Megan L. Fork et al.

Summary: The study on pharmaceuticals in an urban stream network in Baltimore, MD, USA, revealed higher concentrations and more compounds in streams with higher population densities. Annual pharmaceutical loads at the watershed outlet ranged from less than 1 kg to around 15 kg, equivalent to tens of thousands of human doses. Pharmaceuticals are mainly released to surface waters through leaking sewage and treated wastewater effluent pathways, with varying importance among different compounds.
