Sulfite-activated ferrate for water reuse applications

Charles D. Spellman et al.

Summary: Sulfite-activated ferrate is a promising emerging water treatment technology that can effectively oxidize contaminants and disinfect pathogens. Sub-stoichiometric activation shows good performance, while excessive activation leads to decreased treatment efficiency and increased byproduct formation.

Novel solar-driven ferrate(VI) activation system for micropollutant degradation: Elucidating the role of Fe(IV) and Fe(V)

Jiamin Mai et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel process using solar-ferrate(VI) for efficient degradation of micropollutants. The study found that Fe(V) and Fe(IV), rather than reactive oxygen species, played a significant role in the process. The researchers also elucidated the reaction mechanism of Fe(VI) and its degradation of micropollutants. Additionally, the study investigated the effect of pH and various ions on the degradation process. The solar-ferrate(VI) process demonstrated excellent applicability under different irradiation conditions.

Synergistic Degradation of 2,4,4′-Trihydroxybenzophenone Using Carbon Quantum Dots, Ferrate, and Visible Light Irradiation: Insights into Electron Generation/Consumption Mechanism

Afzal Ahmed Dar et al.

Summary: This study presents a unique synthesis method for photocatalytic carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with high electron density and efficient aggregation-induced emission. The CQDs are combined with ferrate to degrade 2,4,4'-trihydroxybenzophenone (2,4,4'-HBP), and the mechanism is investigated through comprehensive characterization and photoluminescence analyses. The CQDs + ferrate + visible light (Vis) system exhibits the highest degradation efficiency, and the reaction intermediates and reactive species are identified. Computational analyses further elucidate the reaction sites of CQDs and 2,4,4'-HBP. These findings have important implications for understanding the electron generation and consumption mechanisms in the degradation of organic pollutants.

Effect of ferrate and monochloramine disinfection on the physiological and transcriptomic response of Escherichia coli at late stationary phase

Sahar Daer et al.

Summary: Disinfection mechanisms vary by disinfectant, with monochloramine potentially inducing viable but non-culturable state through reduced protein synthesis and metabolism, while ferrate does not have this effect. Both disinfectants upregulate oxidative stress response genes, with monochloramine showing slower disinfection kinetics compared to ferrate.
