High efficient bio-denitrification of nitrate contaminated water with low ammonium and sulfate production by a sulfur/pyrite-based bioreactor

Xiaoyu Chen et al.

Summary: Sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification and pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification are important technologies for addressing nitrate pollution. However, their application in engineering is limited due to high sulfate production and low denitrification efficiency, respectively. In this study, a bio-denitrification reactor using sulfur and pyrite as filler materials was studied and showed a high efficiency in removing NO3--N from nitrate contaminated water, with lower production of NH4+-N and SO42- compared to a sulfur-based bioreactor.

Mixotrophic denitrification processes based on composite filler for low carbon/nitrogen wastewater treatment

Liaofan Tang et al.

Summary: Optimal denitrification was achieved at a ratio of 2:1 by adjusting the elemental sulfur content in the composite fillers, leading to an increase in microbial abundance. The biofilm composition transitioned from a single dominant species to multiple species, with an increase in genes related to sulfur metabolism.

Mixotrophic denitrification using pyrite and biodegradable polymer composite as electron donors

Yunmeng Pang et al.

Summary: This study investigated a novel mixotrophic system using pyrite and biodegradable polymer composite as electron donors. Results showed that the mixotrophic system had a higher nitrate removal rate compared to the single heterotrophic and autotrophic systems. XPS analysis identified the formation of sulfur compounds and iron compounds on the pyrite surface during mixotrophic operation. Microbial function analysis revealed the enrichment of genes involved in sulfur oxidation, denitrification, and carbon fixation in the mixotrophic system.

Vertical-flow constructed wetland based on pyrite intensification: Mixotrophic denitrification performance and mechanism

Yifan Chu et al.

Summary: In this study, eight sets of VFCWs were designed to treat low C/N ratio wastewater, and the addition of pyrite significantly improved the denitrification efficiency. Microbial analysis revealed changes in microbial community structure and diversity, as well as enhanced growth of autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria, contributing to improved denitrification capacity.

Study of the effect of pyrite and alkali-modified rice husk substrates on enhancing nitrogen and phosphorus removals in constructed wetlands

Sijia Jiang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of using pyrite and alkali-modified rice husk as substrates for nitrogen and phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands. The results showed that alkali-modified rice husk had more advantages and could be used for low C/N ratio wastewater treatment. Additionally, the tidal flow mode enhanced nitrification and ammonium nitrogen removal rates, although the increase in dissolved oxygen was not sufficient to meet system requirements.

Simultaneous heterotrophic and FeS2-based ferrous autotrophic denitrification process for low-C/N ratio wastewater treatment: Nitrate removal performance and microbial community analysis

Lianfang Zhao et al.

Summary: Heterotrophic-autotrophic denitrification is a cost-effective and risk-reducing approach for wastewater treatment. This study investigated a mixotrophic denitrification system with mixed bacteria to treat low-C/N ratio wastewater and achieved lower total nitrogen (TN) levels compared to heterotrophic and ferrous autotrophic systems.

Influence mechanism of filling ratio on solid-phase denitrification with polycaprolactone as biofilm carrier

Xin He et al.

Summary: This study constructed three up-flow fixed-bed bioreactors with different filling ratios of polycaprolactone (PCL) and found that a low filling ratio favored microbial attachment and growth, while a high influent nitrate load promoted the presence of nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase. Therefore, reducing the filling ratio or increasing the hydraulic retention time (HRT) may be effective measures to save costs for nitrate removal.

Effect of iron on enhanced nitrogen removal from wastewater by sulfur autotrophic denitrification coupled to heterotrophic denitrification under different substrate ratios

Hong Liu et al.

Summary: Fe was investigated for its impact on sulfur autotrophic denitrification coupled to heterotrophic denitrification, and by adjusting substrate ratios, the efficiency of nitrogen removal was enhanced. Different substrate ratios promoted the coexistence of autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria, which cooperated with Fe minerals to improve nitrogen removal.

Natural pyrite improves nitrate removal in constructed wetlands and makes wetland a sink for phosphorus in cold climates

Zhihao Si et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that introducing pyrite into constructed wetlands can enhance denitrification and phosphorus deposition in cold climate conditions. Pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification was found to contribute to nitrogen and phosphorus removal, especially in CW-P3 and CW-P4. Furthermore, Thiobacillus was highly enriched in the rhizosphere and matrix of CW with pyrite, indicating its involvement in pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification.
