A tissue atlas of cadmium accumulation and the correlation with thiol-containing chelates in zucchini provide insights into cadmium partitioning and food safety

Ting Sun et al.

Summary: The research found that in zucchini grown in cadmium-contaminated soils, cadmium mainly accumulated in the roots and fruits, with the exocarp of the fruits being a hotspot region for cadmium. Measurements indicated that the concentration of GSH in subdivided fruit tissues was correlated with cadmium concentration, suggesting a mechanism of phloem-specific transportation of cadmium in the form of Cd-GSH. Based on the data, a tentative model describing the relationship between long-distance phloem transport and cadmium distribution in sink organs was proposed.

Liming and tillering application of manganese alleviates iron manganese plaque reduction and cadmium accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Gaoxiang Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that basal and tillering application of manganese effectively reduces cadmium accumulation in rice, while liming can decrease extractable cadmium in soil but also inhibit soil dissolved manganese and iron manganese plaque.

Effects of sheep bone biochar on soil quality, maize growth, and fractionation and phytoavailability of Cd and Zn in a mining-contaminated soil

Muhammad Azeem et al.

Summary: Sheep bone-derived biochar added at high temperature can increase soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, and phosphorus content, reduce bioavailable fractions of zinc and cadmium, decrease zinc and cadmium content in plant roots and shoots, and also impact soil microbial activity.

Cd immobilization and soil quality under Fe-modified biochar in weakly alkaline soil

Tong Sun et al.

Summary: Fe-modified biochar plays a crucial role in the remediation of Cd contaminated agricultural soil, optimizing soil structure and stability, increasing soil organic carbon content, inhibiting Cd accumulation in maize, and promoting the richness and diversity of soil bacterial communities.

Immobilization of cadmium and lead using phosphorus-rich animal-derived and iron-modified plant-derived biochars under dynamic redox conditions in a paddy soil

Xing Yang et al.

Summary: Functionalized biochar, especially pig carcass-derived biochar, showed promising results in immobilizing cadmium and lead in paddy soils, particularly under low redox conditions. The raw and Fe-rich green waste-derived biochars also demonstrated effectiveness in mitigating the risk of heavy metal contamination in paddy soils under different redox conditions.

Capacity and potential mechanisms of Cd(II) adsorption from aqueous solution by blue algae-derived biochars

Panyang Liu et al.

Summary: This study combined blue algae and pyrolysis technology to produce a late-model biochar, and evaluated the adsorption capacity and potential mechanisms of blue algae-derived biochars for the removal of cadmium from aqueous solution. The optimal blue algae-derived biochar showed a higher Cd removal capacity compared to corn straw-derived and rice husk-derived biochar, with precipitation with minerals being the primary mechanism.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of biochar made from different feedstocks and pyrolysis temperatures on N2O emissions from paddy soil during a drying process. Results showed varying effects of different biochar types on N2O emissions, highlighting the need for caution when considering biochar application to mitigate N2O emissions.
