Characterizing the growing microorganisms at species level in 46 anaerobic digesters at Danish wastewater treatment plants: A six-year survey on microbial community structure and key drivers

Chenjing Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial ecology of anaerobic digestion (AD) in 46 digesters at 22 wastewater treatment plants in Denmark. High-resolution bacterial and archaeal community analyses revealed the characteristics and drivers of community composition in AD systems. The comprehensive insight into community structure at species level provides a foundation for future studies on the ecological significance, characteristics, and function of novel or poorly described taxa.

Life cycle assessment of prospective sewage sludge treatment paths in Germany

Felix Mayer et al.

Summary: A study analyzed four treatment paths for sewage sludge in Germany, showing that AD + spreading had the least environmental impacts, but with high local immission potential. Thermal post-treatment is necessary, with AD + I and AD + HTC + I having overall least impacts, while AD + P + I had similar or higher impacts in all categories. Mitigation of fossil energy use, N2O emissions, and careful selection of phosphorous recovery technology are crucial for all post-treatment paths.

Municipal sewage sludge energetic conversion as a tool for environmental sustainability: production of innovative biofuels and biochar

Aida Ben Hassen Trabelsi et al.

Summary: This study converts municipal sewage sludge into renewable biofuels and high value-added products using a fixed bed pyrolyzer, with optimal conditions identified at 550 degrees C and 15% moisture content. The produced pyrolysis products include complex pyrolytic oil, high-energy bio-oil, syngas with good calorific value, and biochar suitable for use as biofertilizer.
