Respiratory syncytial virus in pediatric influenza-like illness cases in Lombardy, Northern Italy, during seven consecutive winter seasons (from 2014-2015 to 2020-2021)

Laura Pellegrinelli et al.

Summary: The study found that RSV infection rates were higher in children with ILI in Lombardy, especially in children aged 0-5 years. Although the risk of influenza infection was higher than that of RSV, infants aged 4-6 months and 7-12 months had a higher risk of RSV infection, and children with underlying health issues were at a greater risk of RSV infection.

Infectious Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Exhaled Aerosols and Efficacy of Masks During Early Mild Infection

Oluwasanmi O. Adenaiye et al.

Summary: Exhaled SARS-CoV-2 aerosols are infectious and the virus is evolving to generate more efficient aerosols. Loose-fitting masks can moderately reduce viral aerosol release, but to protect vulnerable individuals in public-facing jobs and indoor spaces, ventilation, filtration, UV air sanitation, and tight-fitting masks are needed.

Influenza vaccine effectiveness against A(H3N2) during the delayed 2021/22 epidemic in Canada

Shinhye Kim et al.

Summary: The circulation of influenza virus in Canada stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic and re-emerged in spring 2022. The Canadian Sentinel Practitioner Surveillance Network conducted a study and reported that the vaccine effectiveness against late-season illness due to influenza A(H3N2) clade 3C.2a1b.2a.2 viruses was 36% (95% CI: -38 to 71). These viruses were considered antigenically distinct from the vaccine strain. The findings support the World Health Organization's decision to update the northern hemisphere vaccine for the upcoming season.

Limited Predictability of Amino Acid Substitutions in Seasonal Influenza Viruses

Pierre Barrat-Charlaix et al.

Summary: Current frequency is the strongest predictor of eventual fixation, as expected in neutral evolution, while other properties have little predictive power. Parallel evolution is moderately predictive of fixation, and although LBI has limited capacity for predicting frequency dynamics, it can successfully select strains representative of future populations.
