Enhanced photoelectrochemical performances in photocatalytic pollutant degradation and water splitting by direct Z-scheme Bi2Sn2O7/TiO2 NTAs

Junwei Hou et al.

Summary: The study focused on the construction of ternary metal oxide to enhance the photoelectrochemical performance of TiO2 photocatalysts, with Bi2Sn2O7 nanoparticles sensitizing the TiO2 nanotube arrays. This sensitization extended the solar absorption range into visible light, leading to improved photoelectric performance and enhanced photocatalytic activities for various pollutants under solar irradiation. The formation of a Bi2Sn2O7/TiO2 NTAs heterojunction was beneficial for photoelectron transfer and active radical formation, with .OH and .O2- identified as decisive species for dye degradation. Additionally, the photocatalytic water splitting for H2 evolution showed high efficiency and stability.

In-situ preparation of S-scheme BiOI/BiVO4 heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Zhengdong Xu et al.

Summary: S-scheme BiOI/BiVO4 composites were synthesized successfully, which effectively separate photoexcited carriers and enhance photocatalytic performance. The S-scheme heterojunctions inhibit the recombination of photoinduced carriers. The photocatalytic removal rate of RhB and TC by BiOI/BiVO4 composites is significantly improved under visible light, with the 5% sample exhibiting the highest performance. The BiOI/BiVO4 heterojunctions show excellent stability.

The novel n-n type BiOCl0.8I0.2/Bi5O7I heterojunction composite photocatalysts with high photocatalytic capacity for pollutants

Baolong Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, a specific tube-plate structure and controllable Bi5O7I/BiOCl0.8I0.2 n-n type heterojunction with broad spectrum response was prepared using PVP guided orientation. Photodegradation tests confirmed the excellent catalytic degradation effect of the composite in sewage treatment, with a degradation rate of over 99% for RhB. Compared to unmodified BiOCl0.8I0.2 nanosheets, the catalytic efficiency of the composite was several times higher and equally efficient in the removal of Cr(VI). The formation of the heterojunction between Bi5O7I and BiOCl0.8I0.2 increased the reaction area and broadened the light response range, providing a certain driving force for the migration of photoelectric charge vectors.

Enhanced photocatalysis performance of BiOCl/graphene modified via polyvinylpyrrolidone

F. Q. Li et al.

Summary: The BiOCl/graphene modified via polyvinylpyrrolidone (BRP) showed the highest photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Methyl Orange under visible light illumination. It was found that adding polyvinylpyrrolidone could refine the size of the BiOCl and increase the number of the BiOCl adhered onto the graphene surface, thereby providing the highest efficient catalytic effect.

The same chemical state of carbon gives rise to two peaks in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

G. Greczynski et al.

Summary: Chemical state analysis in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) relies on assigning well-defined binding energy values to core level electrons originating from atoms in particular bonding configurations. Here, direct evidence is presented for the violation of this paradigm, as the C 1s peak due to C-C/C-H bonded atoms from adventitious carbon (AdC) layers splits into two distinctly different contributions. This finding exposes fundamental problems with the reliability of reported XPS data and suggests discontinuing the use of adventitious carbon in XPS.
