Impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on routine immunisation services: evidence of disruption and recovery from 170 countries and territories

Anita Shet et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the impact of COVID-19 on routine immunization. The study found a decrease in the administered doses of diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus-containing vaccine (DTP3) and first dose of measles-containing vaccine (MCV1) in the first half of 2020. The disruption of routine vaccination activities on a global scale highlights the dangers of future vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks. Although vaccinations began to recover in June 2020, further assessment of recovery and implementation of catch-up vaccination strategies are urgently needed.

Multilevel analysis of predictors of multiple indicators of childhood vaccination in Nigeria

Justice Moses K. A. Aheto et al.

Summary: The study identified factors affecting childhood vaccination coverage in Nigeria, including ownership of health cards/documents, receipt of Vitamin A, maternal education level, socio-economic status, and access to healthcare. Urban residence and ethnic group were also found to be significant factors. The study suggests addressing socio-economic factors and healthcare access issues to reduce inequalities in vaccination coverage.

Small area population denominators for improved disease surveillance and response

A. J. Tatem

Summary: The Covid-19 pandemic has emphasized the importance of robust surveillance systems in responding to infectious diseases. However, weaknesses and gaps in population and demographic data have been revealed, including outdated or inaccurate data and a lack of mechanisms for updating. Recent efforts to estimate small area population distributions have shown promise, but there are still barriers to their widespread use in disease surveillance and response.

Mapping routine measles vaccination in low- and middle-income countries

Alyssa N. Sbarra et al.

Summary: Despite the global recommendation of the safe and effective measles vaccine since 1974, there were over 17 million cases of measles in 2017, with the majority occurring in low- and middle-income countries. A study from 2000 to 2019 in 101 LMICs showed that after gains in measles vaccine coverage from 2000 to 2010, there was regression in coverage in over half of the districts from 2010 to 2019, with rural areas having lower coverage than urban areas.

Measles outbreak in complex emergency: estimating vaccine effectiveness and evaluation of the vaccination campaign in Borno State, Nigeria, 2019

Anne Eudes Jean Baptiste et al.

Summary: From January to May 2019, large measles outbreaks affected Nigeria, with Borno state being the most affected. Following an outbreak response immunization campaign in the 13 most affected areas, the measles-containing vaccine coverage and vaccine effectiveness reached 98.4% and 85.7% respectively.

District-level estimation of vaccination coverage: Discrete vs continuous spatial models

C. Edson Utazi et al.

Summary: This study examines the use of spatial modeling approaches to produce district-level estimates of vaccination coverage, comparing discrete spatial smoothing models with continuous GP models. The continuous GP models were found to be a credible alternative to traditional models, offering improved predictive performance and reliability. The analysis provides guidance for practitioners on the use of model-based approaches for estimating vaccination coverage and other HDIs.

Modeling and presentation of vaccination coverage estimates using data from household surveys

Tracy Qi Dong et al.

Summary: Producing high-resolution maps of vaccination coverage by fitting Bayesian geostatistical models to household survey data is gaining popularity. Key choices include acknowledging survey design in modeling and appropriately presenting estimates and uncertainties. Considering urban/rural stratification and cluster-level non-spatial excess variation is crucial, as well as balancing geographical scale and precision in model-based estimates.

Summary: Nigeria is focusing on improving measles vaccination coverage and case-based surveillance to achieve measles elimination. However, survey results show suboptimal vaccination coverage and critically high measles incidence rates, especially in the Northern region.

Polycarp Uchechukwu Ori et al.

Summary: The study on the trend and burden of measles in Bauchi State, Nigeria revealed that a total of 4935 suspected measles cases were reported from 2013 to 2018, with an average annual incidence rate of 15.3 per 100,000 population and a case fatality rate of 1.15%. The majority of cases occurred in the first quarter of each year.

Using Household Surveys to Assess Missed Opportunities for Simultaneous Vaccination: Longitudinal Examples from Colombia and Nigeria

Dale A. Rhoda et al.

Summary: One way to increase vaccination coverage is to minimize missed opportunities for vaccination, specifically missed opportunities for simultaneous vaccination (MOSV). Household surveys can help quantify the occurrence of MOSVs and their impact on achievable vaccination coverage. Automated MOSV analyses in the VCQI software have enabled the study of MOSVs in DHS, MICS, and EPI surveys, with analyses conducted in Colombia and Nigeria for basic vaccine doses among children aged 12-23 months.
