An intelligent tunnel firefighting system and small-scale demonstration

Xiqiang Wu et al.

Summary: A disastrous fire event in a confined tunnel poses a fatal hazard to trapped individuals and firefighters. To address this issue, an intelligent system and digital twin were proposed to collect, manage, process, and visualize tunnel fire information. The system, which achieved an overall accuracy of 98%, effectively identified fire size and location. Furthermore, it displayed a minimal time delay of approximately 1 second and maintained robustness even with damaged temperature sensors.

Full-scale fire tests in the underwater tunnel section model with sidewall smoke extraction

Yaqiang Jiang et al.

Summary: Through full-scale tests on the tunnel section model of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the impact of the sidewall smoke extraction system on tunnel fires was evaluated. The results showed that the fire heat release rate was primarily affected by the size of the liquid-fuel pool and insensitive to ventilation arrangements. The tests demonstrated slow smoke motion, good smoke stratification, and provided a stable condition for safe evacuation. This research deepens the understanding of fire and smoke characteristics with sidewall extraction and emphasizes the importance of full-scale test data for the development of smart tunnel-fire protection systems.

Study on real-time heat release rate inversion for dynamic reconstruction and visualization of tunnel fire scenarios

Chao Guo et al.

Summary: This study proposes a framework that combines tunnel fire knowledge with machine learning to provide key fire parameters and reconstruct tunnel fire scenarios. By establishing mapping rules between tunnel ceiling temperatures and real-time heat release rate using a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) system, the machine learning approach shows promising performance in predicting fire situations.

Theoretical studies on buoyancy-driven ceiling jets of tunnel fires with natural ventilation

Qinghua Guo et al.

Summary: The paper presents a theoretical study on the ceiling jets induced by small fires in tunnels, analyzing the thickness, temperature rise, and velocity of the jets. The study focuses on radial and one-dimensional ceiling jets, with new analytical solutions achieved in the critical flow region. Air entrainment, friction, and heat transfer are found to have significant impacts on the ceiling jet, with validation showing the theory provides accurate predictions for the properties of the ceiling jet.

Study on the longitudinal ceiling temperature distribution induced by double pool fires in a tunnel

You Jia et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the ceiling temperature profile caused by double pool fires in a tunnel through experiments and numerical simulations. A new correction model is proposed to predict the longitudinal ceiling temperature decay more accurately, based on introduced parameters of fire size and fire spacing. The proposed model provides good prediction for both current work and previous related data.

Full-scale experimental investigation on smoke spreading and thermal characteristic in a transversely ventilated urban traffic link tunnel

Jiaqiang Han et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significant impact of transverse ventilation on smoke propagation in tunnel fires. Factors such as fire location, air supply system, and heat release rate influence the speed of smoke spread. Activating more smoke outlets can increase the induced air velocity, facilitating quicker smoke extraction.

Experimental study on the characteristics of temperature distribution of two pool fires with different transverse locations in a naturally ventilated tunnel

Yang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combustion characteristics and temperature distribution of two pool fires in a tunnel, finding that the mass loss rate is influenced by the spacing and transverse distance between the fire sources. A prediction model was developed to describe these influences, providing valuable insights for assessing the risk of tunnel fires with two fire sources.

Experimental study on flame characteristics of double fires in a naturally ventilated tunnel: Flame merging, flame tilt angle and flame height

Kun He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diffusion flame characteristics of double fires generated from separated burners in a naturally ventilated tunnel, considering different heat release rates and fire separation distances. The results showed changes in flame tilt angle, horizontal projected flame length, and vertical flame length with increasing fire separation distance. Critical flame merging separation distance was found to be greater than that of two fires in an open environment due to fire-induced air flows.
