Face stability analysis of shallow shield tunneling in layered ground under seepage flow

Maosong Huang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a limit equilibrium model for shield face stability, emphasizing the effects of ground heterogeneity and seepage flow. The model considers a new wedge mechanism with changing inclination across soil layers. Coupled pore fluid flow and stress finite element simulations are conducted to evaluate the model under different geological and hydrogeological conditions, showing its suitability for assessing necessary face pressures.

Face stability of shield tunnels considering a kinematically admissible velocity field of soil arching

Wei Li et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an improved mechanism for simulating soil movement at tunnel face. The characteristics of velocity distribution are investigated through numerical simulations, and a new kinematically admissible velocity field is proposed based on the simulation results. An improved failure mechanism is constructed using spatial discretization technique, considering soil arching effect and plastic deformation. The accuracy and improvement of the presented method are verified through comparison with numerical simulations, existing analytical studies, and experimental tests.

Experimental and numerical study on tunnel faces reinforced by horizontal bolts in sandy ground

Xiao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducted experimental tests and numerical simulations on reinforced and unreinforced tunnel faces in sandy ground to investigate the reinforcing mechanism of face bolting. The results showed that face bolting significantly influenced face stability, with lower support pressure, reduced soil stress release, and smaller failure zone. The reinforcing effect increased with an increasing number of bolts.

Asymmetric deformation characteristics and mechanical behavior for tunnels in soft-hard inclined contact strata under high geo-stress: a case study

Hao Kou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the problem of large deformation of soft rock in tunnel construction under high geo-stress. The findings showed that asymmetric deformation and unequal pressure in the soft-hard inclined contact stratum could lead to damage to surrounding rock and supporting structure.

Mechanism analysis of tunnel collapse in a soft-hard interbedded surrounding rock mass: A case study of the Yangshan Tunnel in China

Xingzong Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of tunnel collapse in a soft-hard interbedded surrounding rock mass by analyzing two violent collapses at the Yangshan tunnel. It is found that insufficient support strength and the presence of tensile stress in the soft rock layer are the main causes of the collapses.

Influence of seepage and tunnel face opening on face support pressure of EPB shield

Xinsheng Yin et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the opening area of the tunnel face and the anisotropic permeability of the ground would reduce the pore-water pressure in front of the tunnel face, requiring higher support pressure to maintain the stability of the tunnel face.

Face failure in cobble-rich soil: Numerical and experimental approaches on 1 g EPB reduced scale model

Xiongyu Hu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanisms of tunnel face failure in cobble-rich soil in Chengdu, China driven with EPB machines, using a combination of laboratory tests and numerical simulations. The results revealed a fundamentally different tunnel-face failure mechanism in cobble-rich soil compared to clayey or sandy soils, with sudden ground movement during face failure and wider failure zones. The observations from the study provide valuable insights into the behavior of cobble-rich soil during tunneling operations.

Face Stability Analysis of EPB Shield Tunnels in Dry Granular Soils Considering Nonuniform Chamber Pressure and a Dynamic Excavation Process

Xiongyu Hu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that considering nonuniform soil pressure in the chamber leads to a partial failure mode observed in granular soil, influencing face stability and arching effect significantly, especially near the invert, which contrasts with findings associated with global failure modes considered in previous studies.
