Alloys for application at ultra-high temperatures: Nb-silicide in situ composites Challenges, breakthroughs and opportunities

P. Tsakiropoulos

Summary: This paper compares Nb-silicide based alloys with refractory-complex-concentrated-alloys (RCCAs) in terms of density, oxidation, and mechanical properties, highlighting the importance of alloying to suppress oxidation and scale spallation, and to meet fracture toughness goals. The discussion also emphasizes the role of microstructure type, Ti/Si, Ti/Hf, Nb/(Ti + Hf) ratios, and alloying additions in creep behavior, and describes the alloying behavior using parameters such as delta, Delta chi, VEC, Delta Hmix, Delta Smix, and omega. The study shows that RCCAs with Nb and other RM additions can be represented together with Nb-silicide based alloys in the same maps of the aforementioned parameters, indicating similarities in their alloying behavior.

Study of wear and friction properties of a Co-free CrFeNiAl0.4Ti0.2 high entropy alloy from 600 to 950 °C

Cuong Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sliding friction and wear performance of an economical Co-free CrFeNiAl0.4Ti0.2 high entropy alloy over a wide temperature range. The results show that sliding temperature has a significant influence on the friction coefficient, wear rate, and worn surface morphology. The maximum friction coefficient and minimum wear rate are achieved at 800 degrees C. The main wear mechanism is abrasion at 600 degrees C, but oxidation becomes more significant at higher temperatures.

High-temperature tribological behavior of CoCrFeNiV high-entropy alloys: A parallel comparison with CoCrFeNiMn high-entropy alloys

Min Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the high-temperature tribological behavior of CoCrFeNiV and compares it with CoCrFeNiMn. The addition of V element in CoCrFeNiV leads to a significant reduction in wear rate and an increase in hardness. The worn surface analysis reveals that mild adhesion and oxidative wear are the dominant wear mechanisms of CoCrFeNiV. The presence of V2O5, NiO, and Cr2O3 provides excellent anti-oxidation lubrication during the friction process.

Yushan Geng et al.

Summary: This study controllably deployed an enhanced heterostructure and graded grain distribution in the single FCC-phase HEA model according to the concept of selective solid solution, which contributed to the ultrahigh compressive strength and appreciable plasticity levels. It also effectively inhibited high temperature softening and activated in-situ tribochemistry protection, achieving low wear between room-temperature and 800 degrees C.

Summary: FeCrCoNi high entropy alloy matrix composites reinforced with (TiC + SiC) particles at different volume fractions were successfully fabricated via vacuum inductive melting method. The presence of in situ particles significantly enhanced the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the composites, but led to a reduction in elongation. The improvement in strength can be attributed to a combination of various strengthening mechanisms.

Mechanical and tribological performance of CoCrNiHfx eutectic medium-entropy alloys

Yin Du et al.

Summary: The study introduced a lamellar eutectic microstructure in CoCrNi alloy by adding Hf to produce a series of CoCrNiHfx eutectic medium-entropy alloys. Among them, CoCrNiHf0.3 alloy exhibited good plasticity and high strength, showing the best wear performance. The wear behavior is strongly dependent on the applied normal load, with higher hardness due to Hf addition resisting plastic deformation and abrasive wear.
