Opportunities and counterintuitive challenges for decentralized clinical trials to broaden participant inclusion

Noah Goodson et al.

Summary: Traditional clinical trials often fail to recruit representative participant populations. Decentralized clinical trials (DCTs) have been proposed as a potential solution to reduce barriers and attract a wider range of participants, but their impact on participant inclusivity remains to be seen. Digital studies aiming to address a single element of inclusion may inadvertently lead to unintended consequences in other areas. Implementing DCTs presents new challenges such as the digital divide and the need to build new infrastructure.

Patient and public involvement in randomised clinical trials: a mixed-methods study of a clinical trials unit to identify good practice, barriers and facilitators

Lucy Ellen Selman et al.

Summary: The study revealed various challenges in patient and public involvement (PPI) in clinical trials, including recruitment difficulties, maintaining professional boundaries, and lack of training. Successful PPI requires early planning, power sharing, clear roles, and collaboration and communication with public contributors.
