Systematic review to evaluate a potential association between helminth infection and physical stunting in children

E. Raj et al.

Summary: Despite the significant mortality and morbidity caused by helminth infections, the current evidence does not support the hypothesis that helminths directly cause physical stunting in children. However, there is significant heterogeneity between studies, and data from key demographic groups are lacking.

Bifidobacterium infantis treatment promotes weight gain in Bangladeshi infants with severe acute malnutrition

Michael J. Barratt et al.

Summary: Disrupted development of the gut microbiota is a contributing cause of childhood malnutrition. An experiment found that giving B. infantis combined with LNT can increase the abundance of B. infantis subspecies in infants with severe acute malnutrition and promote weight gain, but the effect is still much lower than in healthy controls. A B. infantis strain, Bg_2D9, with superior fitness may have potential in treating malnourished infants.

Summary: This study aims to assess whether dietary supplementation of newborns in rural Kenya with pro/synbiotics prevents or ameliorates EED and improves growth. The study will recruit 600 newborns who will be given specific dietary supplements and followed up until the age of 2 to evaluate primary and secondary outcomes.

The energetic costs of sub-lethal helminth parasites in mammals: a meta-analysis

Kyle M. Shanebeck et al.

Summary: Parasites can have sub-lethal effects on their hosts, affecting their ability to adapt to the environment and maintain homeostasis. This study synthesizes numerous studies on helminth parasites in mammals and finds consistently strong negative effects of infection on host energetic condition across taxonomic groups. The study also highlights the importance of study design, sampling protocol, and host-parasite life history in determining the magnitude of health effects.

Global Burden of Nutritional Deficiencies among Children under 5 Years of Age from 2010 to 2019

Tingting Yue et al.

Summary: This article examines the global distribution and changing trends of nutritional deficiencies among children under 5 years old using data from GBD2019 and explores the correlation between social development status and nutritional deficiencies. The study finds that nutritional deficiencies in children under 5 have improved significantly in the past decade, but the progress is unevenly distributed globally. The incidence and DALY rate decrease with increasing socio-demographic index. Vitamin A deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency, while protein-energy malnutrition causes the highest proportion of DALYs. The article highlights the importance of policies and sustained efforts in controlling nutritional deficiencies, particularly in countries with worrisome levels of nutritional deficiency.

Stunted children display ectopic small intestinal colonization by oral bacteria, which cause lipid malabsorption in experimental models

Pascale Vonaesch et al.

Summary: This study reveals the high prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in stunted children, which leads to increased intestinal permeability, inflammation, and reduced lipid absorption. Additionally, specific fecal signatures associated with EED markers were identified. These findings are crucial for the development of microbiota-targeted interventions for treating EED.

Epigenetic signature of exposure to maternal Trypanosoma cruzi infection in cord blood cells from uninfected newborns

Hans Desale et al.

Summary: The study assessed the epigenetic effects of in utero exposure to maternal Trypanosoma cruzi infection. By comparing the DNA methylation patterns of umbilical cord blood cells from uninfected babies with chagasic and uninfected mothers, a differential DNA methylation signature was identified. The genes affected are related to hematopoietic cell differentiation, immune response, and developmental disorders.

Malnourishment affects gene expression along the length of the small intestine

Raquel M. Pinho et al.

Summary: Malnourishment leads to changes in tissue gene expression that affect energy balance, cell proliferation, nutrient absorption, and stress response. Oxidative stress in the intestine of malnourished animals was also observed. This study provides insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the consequences of malnutrition.

Perinatal and Early-Life Nutrition, Epigenetics, and Allergy

Nathalie Acevedo et al.

Summary: Epidemiological studies suggest a significant increase in allergic diseases over the past few decades, largely attributed to environmental factors such as pollution, loss of rural living conditions, and nutritional status. These environmental factors influence allergic manifestations through epigenetic mechanisms, particularly during the time frame of conception, pregnancy, and early life. The knowledge presented sheds light on the impact of external factors like allergens, viruses, pollutants, diet, and microbiome on cellular metabolic dysfunctions and immune responses in allergic disease mediated by epigenetic mechanisms.

Interactions between fecal gut microbiome, enteric pathogens, and energy regulating hormones among acutely malnourished rural Gambian children

Helen M. Nabwera et al.

Summary: The study revealed distinct differences in gut microbiota and biomarkers between children with marasmus SAM and moderate acute malnutrition, leading to different pathogenesis mechanisms. Marasmus SAM was characterized by lower microbial richness and biomass, significant enrichments in Enterobacteriaceae, whereas these were not observed in children with moderate acute malnutrition.

Field evaluation of the gut microbiome composition of pre-school and school-aged children in Tha Song Yang, Thailand, following oral MDA for STH infections

Katharina Stracke et al.

Summary: Soil-transmitted helminth infections have a significant negative impact on global population health, especially affecting children disproportionately. The lack of infection prevalence data in many endemic regions highlights the importance of molecular tools for establishing accurate epidemiological profiles. The gut microbiota can be influenced by medication, lifestyle factors, and co-inhabitation with parasites, but baseline studies in this area are limited.

The COVID-19 crisis will exacerbate maternal and child undernutrition and child mortality in low- and middle-income countries

Saskia Osendarp et al.

Summary: The impact of the COVID-19 crisis on maternal and child nutrition outcomes in low- and middle-income countries is projected under different scenarios, with a focus on mitigating excess child stunting and mortality through nutrition interventions. The disruptions caused by the pandemic could lead to an increase in wasted and stunted children, along with additional child deaths and maternal anaemia cases. Governments and donors will need to invest additional resources to scale up nutrition interventions and address the potential long-term productivity losses.
