Fractures in type 2 diabetes confer excess mortality: The Dubbo osteoporosis epidemiology study

Angela Sheu et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals with type 2 diabetes have a significantly increased mortality risk following fractures. This risk is particularly high for those with diabetes duration of more than 5 years and experiencing hip/vertebral fractures (in men) or non-hip non-vertebral fractures (in women). Therefore, careful monitoring and management after fractures are crucial for individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Assessment and treatment of osteoporosis and fractures in type 2 diabetes

Angela Sheu et al.

Summary: There is substantial evidence linking type 2 diabetes to skeletal fragility, despite preserved bone mineral density. The post-fracture outcomes in diabetic patients are worse, raising questions about the ideal assessment and treatment of bone health. Current fracture risk calculators are not effective in predicting fracture risk in these patients, and there is a lack of dedicated randomized controlled trials to identify optimal management for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Risk factors for lower bone mineral density in older adults with type 1 diabetes: a cross-sectional study

Ann Schwartz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of diabetes-related factors on hip bone mineral density (BMD) in older adults with type 1 diabetes. The results suggest that poor glycemic control, advanced glycation end products (AGEs) accumulation, and kidney disease are independent risk factors for lower hip BMD in this population. Maintaining glycemic control and preventing kidney disease may reduce bone loss and fracture risk. Osteoporosis screening may be particularly important for individuals with these risk factors.

The association between common serum adipokines levels and postmenopausal osteoporosis: A meta-analysis

Linyuan Shu et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis study found that individuals with postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) have lower blood leptin levels and higher adiponectin levels compared to healthy individuals with normal bone mineral density. The statistical difference in leptin level changed after removing the confounding influence of leptin sources and assay approaches. The study also found a positive association between leptin level and body mass index (BMI), and a negative association between adiponectin level and bone mineral density (BMD). Adiponectin had the highest probability of predicting PMOP.

Summary: Age, sex, HbA1c, history of falls, history of fractures, and weak grip strength are associated with fractures in older adults with type 2 diabetes. Other factors like bone mineral density, BMI, smoking, physical function, chronic diseases, medications were not found to be associated with fracture incidence in this study.

Adiponectin signalling in bone homeostasis, with age and in disease

Jonathan W. Lewis et al.

Summary: Adiponectin plays a complex role in bone formation and turnover, with studies showing contradictory effects. While in vivo murine models and in vitro experiments suggest a pro-osteogenic role for adiponectin, human studies indicate an inverse relationship between adiponectin concentration and bone activity. The significance of adiponectin signaling pathway in regulating bone homeostasis and repair remains unclear.
