This article provides physiological and metabolic insights into the complex role of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in fine-tuning algal metabolism to improve productivity. Genetic engineering strategies to enhance algal GABA biosynthesis are also discussed. The aim is to offer an understanding of how GABA can be utilized for cost-competitive algae-based biofuels and bioproducts.
