Distributionally Robust Optimization Approaches for a Stochastic Mobile Facility Fleet Sizing, Routing, and Scheduling Problem

Karmel S. Shehadeh

Summary: This article proposes two distributionally robust optimization models for a mobile facility fleet-sizing, routing, and scheduling problem with time-dependent and random demand. The models aim to find the fleet size and a route and time schedule for each facility, while minimizing costs and incorporating risk measures. The authors also propose an algorithm to solve the models, derive valid lower bound inequalities, and introduce symmetry-breaking constraints to improve solvability. Computational experiments are conducted to compare the performance of the proposed models with a stochastic programming model and gain insights into the problem.

Distributionally Robust Optimization Approaches for a Stochastic Mobile Facility Fleet Sizing, Routing, and Scheduling Problem

Karmel S. Shehadeh

Summary: We propose two distributionally robust optimization models for a mobile facility fleet-sizing, routing, and scheduling problem. The objective is to minimize the fixed cost of establishing the fleet plus a risk measure of the operational cost over all demand distributions defined by an ambiguity set. To solve these models, a decomposition-based algorithm is proposed, along with valid lower bound inequalities and symmetry-breaking constraints. Extensive computational experiments are presented, comparing the proposed models with a stochastic programming model and providing insights into the problem.

A multi-objective distributionally robust model for sustainable last mile relief network design problem

Peiyu Zhang et al.

Summary: Natural disasters not only cause massive losses but also psychological damage, and can even lead to social unrest. It is important to design a sustainable relief network for distributing supplies. This study proposes a multi-objective distributionally robust optimization model to maximize equitable distribution while minimizing transportation time and cost.

Distributional robustness and lateral transshipment for disaster relief logistics planning under demand ambiguity

Duo Wang et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the strategic and operational decisions in disaster relief logistics planning, including facility location, inventory pre-positioning, and vehicle routing. It proposes an effective lateral transshipment strategy to evenly distribute relief resources between warehouses. A risk-averse two-stage distributionally robust optimization (DRO) model is developed to handle demand uncertainty. The model is transformed into a linear mixed-integer programming model for computational tractability. The results show the advantage of the proposed DRO model over the traditional robust optimization model and demonstrate its applicability in a real-world case study.
