Green synthesis of glycerol carbonate via transesterification of glycerol using mechanochemically prepared sodium aluminate catalysts

John Keogh et al.

Summary: The synthesis of glycerol carbonate via the transesterification of glycerol with dimethyl carbonate using supported sodium aluminate catalysts is an efficient method with high yield. Mechanically prepared catalysts were found to be more stable, with alumina support providing the highest stability. The catalyst with 20 wt % sodium aluminate supported on alumina showed the best performance in terms of efficiency and stability.

Regulating oxygen defects via atomically dispersed alumina on Pt/WOx catalyst for enhanced hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol

Man Yang et al.

Summary: Tungsten-based catalysts are widely studied in the selective hydrogenolysis of secondary C-O bonds. In this study, a Pt/Al-WOx catalyst, with atomically dispersed alumina as a promoter, is successfully synthesized and found to exhibit higher activity and selectivity compared to the unpromoted Pt/WOx catalyst. Spectroscopy characterizations and chemisorption experiments reveal that this enhanced performance is attributed to the in-situ generation of oxygen vacancies on WOx by atomically dispersed alumina in a hydrogen atmosphere, which leads to increased selective adsorption of glycerol and in-situ Bronsted acid sites for the activation of secondary C-O bonds.

Methane oxidation to methyl trifluoroacetate by simple anionic palladium catalyst: Comprehensive understanding of K2S2O8-based methane oxidation in CF3CO2H

Seok-Hyeon Cheong et al.

Summary: This study reports that the anionic form of palladium, PdCl(4)(2-), can effectively convert methane to methyl trifluoroacetate (MeTFA) in the K2S2O8-HTFA oxidation system. The anionic catalyst form increases Pd solubility in the HTFA solvent, facilitating the conversion to the real catalytic species. The role of trifluoroacetic anhydride (TFAA) in removing water produced by the oxidant and oxidation byproduct is also identified for the first time.

Advances in solid catalysts for selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol

Susmita Bhowmik et al.

Summary: Glycerol, a top platform chemical obtained from biomass, can be selectively converted into 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) using solid catalysts, particularly Pt and Ir catalysts in combination with reducible oxides. The selective hydrogenolysis process is influenced by factors such as metal dispersion, electronic connectivity, hydrogen activation, and acidity of the catalysts. Recent advancements have led to improved performance in the formation of 1,3-PDO for applications in advanced polymers.

Sustainable utilization of waste glycerol for 1,3-propanediol production over Pt/WOx/Al2O3 catalysts: Effects of catalyst pore sizes and optimization of synthesis conditions

Thanapha Numpilai et al.

Summary: The study focused on the conversion of waste glycerol to 1,3-propanediol using Pt/WOx/Al2O3 catalysts, and found that the catalyst pore sizes and operating conditions significantly influenced the process. It was observed that while small-pore catalysts may have advantages in terms of active metal dispersion and acidity, they could also lead to diffusional restrictions and hinder the exposure of catalytic active sites, resulting in lower product yields.

Facilitating Pt-WOx Species Interaction for Efficient Glycerol Hydrogenolysis to 1,3-Propanediol

Binbin Zhao et al.

Summary: Efficient catalysts for glycerol hydrogenolysis to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) are challenging to design. By fabricating highly-dispersed WOx species on an inert support and adjusting the amount of Pt-WOx interface active sites, excellent catalytic performance can be achieved in high concentration glycerol reactions. A high catalytic efficiency is attributed to the strong interaction between isolated WO4 species and platinum, which in-situ generates Bronsted acid sites during the reaction.
