Elastic critical moment for monosymmetric beams under linear moment gradients

Wenbin Xie et al.

Summary: This study points out inconsistencies in applying lateral torsional buckling provisions of Canadian standards to determine elastic critical moments for monosymmetric beams with linear moment gradients. The theoretical background is summarized and the reasons for the discrepancies between standard solutions and theoretical/finite element solutions are discussed. An improved solution is proposed based on a parametric study and regression equations, which is illustrated through a design example.

Design Considerations for Distortional Lateral Buckling

Ramin Arizou et al.

Summary: A finite-element formulation is presented for the elastic distortional buckling analysis of doubly symmetric wide flange beams, with features to capture load height effects and enforce user-defined kinematic constraints. This formulation is used to investigate the effects of load height and bracing height on beams, and develop a database for practical beam cross-sections.

Lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) method for the design of glass fins with continuous lateral restraints at the tensioned edge

Chiara Bedon

Summary: The lateral torsional buckling (LTB) analysis of glass fins restrained to glass wall panels via continuous, flexible joints as lateral restraints (LRs) is critical, especially under suction. Closed-form expressions validated by Finite Element (FE) numerical models are proposed to predict the critical buckling moment of LR fins with tensioned edge restrained. A simplified linearized formulation is also suggested to capture the limit conditions for LRs in a given glass geometry, with worked examples presented for verification purposes.
