DSM design of fixed-ended slender built-up back-to-back cold-formed steel compression members

Son Tung Vy et al.

Summary: This study focuses on slender BC members with fixed ends, which are sensitive to local-global interaction or global buckling. Many tests of fixed-ended slender channel and BC compression members, which failed mostly by local-global interaction buckling, were conducted first, followed by developing validated finite element models. The outcomes from tests and finite element analyses provided improved understanding of the behaviour of BC members and were used to compare their compression capacities against twice the individual member capacities, showing the limitations of the current design equations available in the standards and research publications. Finally, reliable design guidelines were proposed using the Direct Strength Method (DSM).

Experimental and numerical investigation on cold-formed steel built-up section pin-ended columns

Qiu-Yun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the buckling behavior and loading capacity of cold-formed steel (CFS) built-up section members under axial compression through a thorough test program and numerical simulation. The results showed that the current design rules for CFS built-up section members were generally conservative and scattered in predicting resistance, leading to proposed modifications of the codified DSM equations for more reliable strength predictions.

Design of cold-formed steel wall studs subject to non-uniform elevated temperature distributions

M. Rokilan et al.

Summary: This paper first investigates the accuracy of the current design rules for cold-formed steel studs in wall systems subject to non-uniform elevated temperature distributions, and then simplifies the calculation process without compromising accuracy. It also improves the accuracy of the current design equations. The paper then explores the possibilities of using uniform temperature based design equations for non-uniform temperature distributions and proposes a simplified design method.

Built-up back-to-back cold-formed steel compression members failing by local and distortional buckling

Son Tung Vy et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the compression behavior and capacity of built-up back-to-back CFS channel sections, examining the effects of screw fastener characteristics and arrangements. It proposes a simple DSM-based design method after conducting compression tests, developing finite element models, and conducting a parametric study. The study aims to improve the accuracy of current design equations and provide recommendations for CFS design standards.

Local in-plane strength and stiffness of stud-to-sheathing fastener connections in LSF wall panels

Tharindu Abeysiriwardena et al.

Summary: Experimental study was conducted to investigate the non-linear local in-plane strength and stiffness of screw-fastened stud-to-gypsum plasterboard sheathing connections by varying a range of parameters affecting their stiffness and capacities. The resulting load-displacement curves were analysed, and models of characteristic curves were developed. Finite element model and analytical model were then developed to determine the local in-plane response and initial stiffness of stud-to-sheathing screw fastener connections, and were validated using experimental results.

Son Tung Vy et al.

Summary: This research aims to provide design guidelines for NC compression members commonly used in Australian buildings, by conducting tests and finite element analysis on these members failing in global or local-global interaction buckling, and proposing a simple and reliable design method based on the Direct Strength Method in current design standards.

Built-up nested cold-formed steel compression members subject to local or distortional buckling

Son Tung Vy et al.

Summary: This research investigated the behavior and capacity of nested CFS channel compression members, carrying out experimental tests, developing finite element models, and conducting a parametric study. The study concluded that the accuracy of current design standards and research papers needs further validation, and recommended a simple design method based on DSM.
